I think the earlier post indicating that F-5s were the aggressors is "more" correct.

Since F-5s and T-38s are virtually indistinguishable and derive from a common design, it is a relatively easy, excusable mistake. I'm also not eliminating the possibility that some T-38s were used. But, F-5s were actually used as aggressors at the school, and certainly most or all of the MiGs in the film were F-5s.

(The film used A-4s to depict aggressor aircraft at the school.)

I always thought the black pilot having the call name of "Sundown" was slightly racist.

Played by Rick Rossovich.

You might remember him as the guy the first Terminator killed at Sarah Connor's apartment. Famous last words, "'Don't make me bust you up, man." Has appeared in 6 films with Bill Paxton, 1 more than Michael Biehn. Lords of Discipline, Deadly Lessons (TV), Streets of Fire, Terminator, Navy SEALs, Future Shock.

Rossovich's brother, Tim Rossovich, has also acted, some, following a career as an NFL linebacker. Tim's college roommate at USC was Tom Selleck.

What about Dorian Harewood's character in Full Metal Jacket? Eightball. Key quote, "Put a n-word behind the trigger."

Alright, it's been almost a day...
What suburban NOLA city park has both an F-14 and an F-5 on display?

I'm genuinely curious about this!

The Navy actually fired a live Sidewinder missile during filming.

Maverick's character is loosely based off of former Top Gun fighter pilot and Congressman Duke Cunningham.

Seriously? Maybe the sequel would have been more interesting if Maverick had been elected to Congress, gone to DC and then whored himself out to Defense Contractors.

Duke Cunningham was an F-4 stud, war hero and earned his Navy Cross, but he embarrassed himself and ruined his reputation later in life.

I had no clue about the planes in Lions Park, and I grew up in Metairie. But, on the other hand, I never spent much time in Kennah, brah.

Has anyone ever noticed that when Sundown was flying with Maverick, his call sign was on his helmet and when he was chewing Maverick out on the flight line the call sign was gone? It was back on when Maverick turned around and grabbed him.

Isn't that why (or one of the reasons) that Maverick's dad was named Duke Mitchell?
