What you believe or don't believe means absolutely nothing to me.
Most of us MTV board veterans have seen quite a few films.

He is great in Heist. Solid cast and movie!

What makes his career even more incredible is that he didn't even START acting until he was almost 30. Had been in the military, and then worked odd jobs for a several years before acting.

Probably my favorite actor. Just controlled every scene he was in.
The monologue in Unforgiven made that movie IMO.

Hackman, In some respects, is the greatest actor ever simply because anything he was ever in was watchable. Even the heavyweights couldn't always do that. I think Hollywood took him forgranted because of simply how great he was in every single role.
Most are going to say The French Connection was his best role, I would probably agree...it's definitely his best film.
My personal favorite role, of his is Harry Zimm in Get Shorty. That's a perfect movie with a perfect cast.
Its basically a toss up for all of his stuff. Crimson Tide, Unforgiven, Scarecrow, Young Frankenstein, A Bridge Too Far, Night Moves, Tenenbaums, Mississippi Burning, and of course...The Conversation, and everything else. He was the best. What's crazier is he was roommates with Hoffman and Duvall as struggling NY actors .....just think about that.

Hackman was great in Bat 21 as well.
My aunt was an extra in MS Burning and met him and Willem Dafoe and said they were both as nice and approachable as they could be.

My dad, R.I.P., looked a little like Hackman.
More to the point, he would smile when he was pissed off like Gene.
That shite worked.

With superman being one of my favorites as a kid he was the first villain I'd ever known. At age 36 he still may be the best.

No Behind Enemy Lines!???
I was going to post this. I haven't seen anyone post about Behind Enemy Lines, but I really like that show. It may not be his top 10, but it's solid.

Someone finally mentions Heist! I loved that movie, and it may be my platonic ideal of a heist film.
I think you have to go French Connection as his best performance, and it's certainly the most iconic, but man... do I love The Conversation.
Hackman is so great because he's like a British actor, he's a solid professional who puts in his work, regardless of how terrible the movie or ridiculous the material. He's a craftsman who never blames his tools or mails it in. Look at something like The Replacements. That's a formulaic sports movie that should have been forgotten in a year. Instead, it's a TBS/TNT regular, largely because he lifts it into a real movie, even goading a believable performance out of Keanu Reeves.
Hackman is the friggin best.

I came across this quote from Jerry Reed while watching Smokey and the Bandit last night
quote:
Talking about Gene Hackman in Bat*21 (1988): "He don't act. He just shows up and he 'be's."
