Looked and saw no thread on this BBC show. Watched the premier of my DVD and wow thought it was great. It is about the Great Heathen Army and the Danes taking over the Danelaw in 9th Century England. Looks extremely promising.

I should have DVR'ed it. I had set a reminder for it and started watching it. Was enjoying it, but turned over to one of the college football games and stayed with that.

I really enjoyed it, seems more accurate so far then Vikings (which I enjoy for fun). Of course any depiction of characters from that era is pretty much going to be made up but the BBC did not Hollywood it up.

Great news! I DVRd it. Cornwell is my favorite author and this is my favorite series from him so I've been excited about this show for a while.

If you're not familiar, Bernard Cornwell does historical fiction better than anyone else I've read. He tries to keep a sense of realism and accuracy. This series is set during King Alfred's time which is fascinating and largely unfamiliar to most people.

Better than the Vikings on the History channel.

Just wish they would show more on the old English spoken and how one could tell a Brit, from an Angle, Angle-Saxon, Dane and the Viking.

England at that time was truly a country divided by language, customs, dress and warfare.

Very well done so far.

I was skeptical of the casting for Uhtred. He's supposed to look something like Chris Hemsworth.

I've watched the first two episodes and I'm impressed. This show is more entertaining than Vikings and infinitely better than Bastard. The main character is actually entertaining and not simply a wooden plot device. I'm an avid reader of the books and this show is doing them justice.

I didn't even know this was a thing. Cornwell is my favorite author. Always thought his books would make excellent movies/TV. Hope they do the Warlord Chronicles next.

Any way to watch this online?

Salamander_Wilson I have never read any of his works, I have heard he is a very good writer, which of his works do you like the best.

I am going to pick up one this coming week to test the waters.

My favorite series of his is The Warlord Chronicles. The reason is twofold: It was the first books of his I ever read, and I've always been a fan of the Arthurian legend. These 3 books, starting with "The Winter King" are historical fiction based on the "real" Arthur, who was a ruling Warlord in the 5th century, but was never king as his later Christian legends made him.

I also really enjoyed the Grail Series. It's about an archer named Thomas and is set during the hundred years war and has at its heart the search for Christian relics, including the Holy Grail.

The series this BBC series is based on, is Cornwell's current and one of his longest. The protagonist, Uhtred, is one of his most complex... As he is very flawed and is not an entirely noble individual..

I'll tell you this about Cornwell... He describes battle in a way that really makes you feel you are a part of it. He's simply the best.

The Saxon series (that this series is based off) is my favorite Cornwell Bc Uhtred is such a great character. He's absolutely violent and fearless, but he also has humor and wit. Plus I love the historical setting of 9th century England.

The Warlord series was wonderful also, the only drawback being Derfel the main character. He's similar to Utred as far as the fighting goes, but he lacks any further personality. He almost seems like a plot device at times. No humor, nothing interesting. But the story and setting is so masterful that I loved the books anyway.

Was looking forward to this, but the BBC doesn't seem to share my preferences for Saturday viewing.
