Kurtz said the franchise declined when Lucas exerted more control as he focused more on merchandising and to heck with the plots.

It seems this new one might be getting away from the CGI crap and going back to what works.

Do you think Disney owning Lucas has anything to do with that? In other words, is Disney exerting its own control but in a good way?

I promise you there will be a shite ton of CGI in the new Star Wars movies.

And yes, Lucas has very little to do with the new films. The plot will be good (not great).

Why start now?

Seriously...we fricking get it. We all saw this play out in ANOTHER thread about this movie last week. How about you do everyone a favor and not derail every fricking thread from now until release date with this point of view?

It's noted for frick's sake... Even the jackasses who would also agree with this take have got to find this act tiresome by now, right?

You want to bitch about this movie in regards to this topic, you ought to be told to take it to the PoliBoard where your agreement rate will skyrocket in that echo chamber.

disney doesnt have to focus on merchandising, they have entire divisions to worry about that

the movie production team can worry about the movie, and the merchandising folks will make disney millions upon millions by coming up with some merch for the kids

Disney is smart enough to know that no matter what Star Wars merch will sell big, so building the movies around it was pointless.

The amount of Star wars Merch at Disney is insane. Each gift shop has Disney stuff. Even those fancy shops with the paintings and art have star wars stuff. I know for sure Disney is making a mint on merchandise.

Disney has to make their money back from buying Lucasfilm, and maximize their profit. The best way to do that is to make GOOD films. Good films make a lot of money, they sell merchandise, they sell downloads, OnDemand purchases, etc etc.

And they create a whole new generation of fans. That's something the prequels really didn't do. The OT created a whole generation of huge Star Wars nerds. The Prequels not so much.

Disney is as shrewd as they come.

I think the two cartoons have already helped with this. The new movies will just be icing on the cake. There is such a large beloved universe that surrounds Star Wars. Disney could make a movie about a group of scruffy looking nerf herders and people would pay big money to go and see it.

With the expansion of the Star Wars presence at the Disney parks, I see this becoming their new cash cow for years to come.

Am I the only one who thought Lucas got ripped off when he sold the rights to Disney for only $4 billion. They are worth way more than that.

George made $4.06 billion on the sale. That doesnt count what hes made over the years off of Lucasfilm, Lucasarts, ILM, Star Wars rights, etc.

I think George and his progeny will be okay.

Well, he makes 4 bil. just sitting on his arse vs. ??? more for moving heaven and earth creating the 27 movies they're going to make.

Plus, if it was him making the new movies, there wouldn't be a lot of enthusiasm for them. They would be hits, but they would also likely suck, so we all win with this arrangement.

Are you really trying to garner sympathy for a billionaire who made half his fortune raping our childhoods?
