I went in to this Ep having no idea what to expect and it was damn fun. They injected the right amount of serious dialogue to balance the music out and I'll be damned if it didn't work well.

They did a nice job or connecting Roger Corby and Carol Marcus to the canon.

I took a look at the trailer for next weeks season finale and it's going to be serious with an undoubtedly cliffhanger.

It turned out better than I expected, but from last week’s intense episode to something musical just seemed strange. My wife doesn’t care for any musicals so I didn’t tell her what was coming, 30 seconds of signing and I was watching it by myself.

I hate musicals and it was not a fun episode for me, at all. I hated it.

Agree. Man, and I love me some Star Trek, but musicals taking 5 minutes through song to tell me what a sentence or two of dialog can drives me crazy.

I fast forwarded through most of it.

La’an has a great voice if that’s really her.
Seemed like she was the one not (or least) auto tuned. She should’ve had a second number.

We enjoyed it. Wife is obsessed with musical theater so she loved it. Love this cast. Entire episode seemed like a love letter to Nichelle Nichols.

This is kind of where I'm at but the post above mine suggests it was like a love letter to Nichelle Nichols and if so that's pretty cool. I had not considered that

I guess we are going to get one outlandish episode like this per season? Last year was the fairy tale come alive episode.

The problem is that there’s only 10 episodes per season, so that makes 10% (at least) of SNW’s episodes novelty episodes. The Lower Decks crossover was also a novelty episode.

Now, I appreciate creativity, and this episode had fun parts. And some serious parts mixed in. But I have to say this… I would like the only Star Trek show I watch to be a little more adventure-based and less self-referential. Sometimes I feel like I’m watching a show that’s a tribute to Star Trek instead of Star Trek.

Side note - there has to be consequences for what M’Benga did and Chapel’s coverup of it. This show kind of needs some conflict.

While this series is episodic, there are a ton of ongoing plotlines. They left M'Benga's incident with, "There'll be an inquiry/investigation." I can see this coming back to bite him. After all, we do know that he is replaced while Pike is still in command, and Chapel will leave to study with Roger Corby. I can see an episode next season where M'Benga is called in front of a tribunal and that's when Chapel returns as the "surprise witness". It's an obvious twist, but with Chapel leaving at the end of the season, having some time go by and having her return early next season makes sense.

She's a great character, I'd hate to lose her for too long.

Side note - With Pike rarely seeing his spouse and Kirk knowing what Carol Marcus is going through without him, Spock needs to man-up (or Vulcan-up) about Chapel moving on with her career. Another obvious "twist", but it would be great for her to come back and find that Spock is back in his TOS groove and she's back on his shelf again.

Are you sure about that? Dr. M'Benga was prominent in treating Spocks gunshot would in "A Private Little War"...McCoy even reassured Kirk that he was in the best hands as M'Benga interned in a "Vulcan War".

He wasn't a constant presence. By the time we get to the first pilot, we have a new Chief Medical Officer. Then another before Bones takes over. At the very least he's demoted.

That would seem to be the more "logical" answer. Perhaps he lost his CMO status.

I'm not sure what was going on with the CMO's early in the series. Dr. McCoy was the doctor for the first two episodes, including a prominent role in the first one, The Man Trap, but for some reason the third episode, Where No Man Has Gone Before, had the guy who played the Marshall from Rifleman, Paul Fix, as the doctor. Then it went back to McCoy to stay

I don't know if DeForest Kelly was simply unavailable for some reason that week or what but that was a little odd. Either way for some reason M'Benga is not the CMO by the time TOS begins, including the pilot as you pointed out.

The Paul Fix episode was shot first. Roddenberry couldn’t get approval on Kelley from the studio.

If you listened to the words of Spock’s song - guh, words I cringe a little to type - he sure seemed to be clear that he was going to become his logical self. It also, somewhat surprisingly, portrayed Spock as having more of a deep emotional connection to the relationship while painting Chapel as a bit of a floosey. Ok, maybe a little harsh with that…but I think it certainly sets up that in TOS a more mature Chapel pines over what she missed with Spock.

It’s been a minute since I’ve seen The Wrath of Khan, and it may not have been clear then, but I think the official Trek lore is that Carol Marcus asked Kirk to leave her alone and not be a part of raising his son. The acknowledgement in this episode that Kirk knows she is pregnant would seem to go along with that.

I'm almost convinced that wasn't Anson Mount singing his lines. Could be, but it just seems off.

I liked the episode, but the ending didn't land though. A pep talk from a communications officer about being together on a ship is supposed to bring emotional response from all crew members? Not saying there's a bunch of haters on the ship, but you gotta think there's at least some who don't like other people and just there to do a job.

And in today's time, Klingons rapping was a little cringe for reasons.

SPOILER WARNING

Just watched the season 2 finale, and it’s a massive F—— YOU to fans. Yes, I understand that last season ended with a lingering question over some legal trouble for Number One…but they concluded the story of the episode.

This is some cheap buzz feed you won’t believe #9 bulls—-. If it was a one-week “to be continued” then maybe I could abide it, but waiting a year? I may just be done with this show in general principles. Which I hate, because it have otherwise enjoyed it.

I’m really hoping that, oh, I don’t know they are going to shock the world by saying it was planned to release the episode 2.7 early and have the season finale still be on August 17, but just a two parter….but I don’t see that happening.

As for the episode itself, we get the introduction of yet another core TOS character. They seem to make Scotty more of the Simon Pegg goofball version,
which well, whatever. With him, Spock, Uhura and Chapel around I think back to “Arena” and try to recall why no one knew of the Gorn. Speaking of those two, we
get a cheesy “oh is she dead” plot when we obviously know she can’t be, only for it to be resolved by her being the lazy-writing miraculous lone survivor.

Friend, we watched 2 entirely different show because 2.10 was freaking great.

It's tricky to keep ultra faithful to canon because TOS had difficulties with consistencies during it's run. The Prime Directive was more of a suggestion than an absolute. That being said the showrunners are doing a pretty good job with backstories. It's not going to be perfect but this is the best Star Trek in a long time and most folks are enjoying it.

I like the new Scotty. I like the way SNW is slowly putting the band together.

Don't be so pedantic. Enjoy the show. This episode had great action, good drama and I like a good cliff hanger.

Hopefully the writers and actors strike won't drag out so we can see how this ends.

Yeah… gotta disagree. Leaving this season with a cliffhanger is NOTHING compared to the angst generated by SNG’s “Best of Both Worlds” cliffhanger… the greatest TV cliffhanger outside of “Who Shot JR?”

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that a show like SNW would emulate SNG with a season-ending cliffhanger while the show is gaining momentum.

These are the things that build fan bases, not alienate them. There’s nothing like a good cliffhanger. Embrace the hurt!

I had trouble with the episode and didn't finish it. I'll just catch the update before the next one.
I think today?
