Then look at the trailers for the reboots, you don't even have to see the movies to know it's not the same universe.

It's not just age or dumbing down Star Trek for teenagers...the vibe and approach is 100% different.

Audiences tastes have changed. Star Trek had to modernize (and get away from the niche fans who love them some Klingon politics) to survive as a franchise. It was more then successful. As I recall 2009 made more then any other Star Trek film (adjusted for inflation) and Into Darkness for all it's flaws is number 2.

What passed for decent stories at the theater in the 50s isn't going to work now....

Frankly, television does a better job telling decent stories then any film anymore and Star Trek is so much better on TV then it has ever been in the theaters...but that an entirely different debate.

The movie cleaned up at the box office and at the end of the day...that's the important bit.
So did Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. I guess those are both awesome too.

Because it's Starship Troopers as Star Trek. It's entertaining to a degree.

But it's not smart.

Woah, woah, woah... calm down there. Starship Troopers was a VERY smart movie.

Agree...it didn't follow the books very well (as I recall) thus the hate for it.

Always cracks me up how much the OG nerds freak out about the new Star Trek's. I love them, good mindless space fun.

The reboots have been hit or miss we me. I didn't like ST09 - I thought the time travel was dumb and wasnt interested in the origin story.

I like Into Darkness, though. Although it had a lot of dumb, eye roll moments.

Actually, when I went to see the first Star Trek reboot, I hated the shite out of it. It pissed me off how everything got changed around. Then . . . it kinda grew on me and I changed my mind. The second one, I really wanted to like it but was kinda disappointed. I had not really cared about the latest one until now.

I haven't hated any of the new Star Trek films. I think the only original film I don't like is Generations.

With the new ones, I loved Star Trek 09. When it came out, I loved Into Darkness. It doesn't hold up as well on repeat viewings but it's still a fun movie.

All in all, I'm not sure "Star Trek" works as a film franchise. You can make action movies set in the Star Trek universe, which have been what pretty much all the films aside from TMP have been, but this is a franchise that is best done justice on the small screen.

I can see why younger folks rank Motion Picture so low but you folks are wrong. It was insane to see the crew back on the big screen. Heck nobody had a clue that was even possible. After watching repeats, it was so cool to see the gang back together.

All the talk about the original being so smart is overblown nonsense. Hell, the plot of 1 and 4 is the same and it was copy of the plot from the show. Sure some variation but we had 3 stories about an evil / mutated satellite.

All lists are wrong if they don't have Nemesis last and by last I mean buried under 40,000,000 tons of garbage.

The plot is insultingly stupid. I want to destroy Earth but not the folks who enslaved and killed my mom. The non reaction to Data's death and them treating him like B4 is a nice replacement is pure shite.

I hope Data's positronic brain survived the explosion. I hope someone finds it and puts it back together and then I hope Data goes on a Quentin Tarantino revenge murder rampage killing off the surviving members of the Enterprise. They all suck.

Sure, the original movies had less action but they still had plenty and in reality the only reason they didn't have more was the geriatric cast and smaller budgets.

Nemesis is the only Trek I hate. Enterprise was weak but it grew on my at the very end. Insurrection wasn't good but it wasn't in the same universe as Nemesis.

I'm a huge fan of all the series. Even really liked Enterprise. But I always thought the movies were pretty bad. Some parts here and there were OK, but generally really bad effects, plots, and writing.

I like the reboot. Sure, it's all about action and, aside from Kirk and Spock, zero character development, but that's OK. When I'm in the mood for space politics, I fire up Netflix for some DS9.

Nemesis killed the franchise for years, but Generations was completely nonsensical. The Enterprise B is the "only ship in range" of the distress call, yet it is inside of Earth's solar system which is the headquarters of the Federation. There should be thousands of ships flying around.

Then, the lamest villain of all time actually beats the TNG Crew and fires the rocket into the sun (which blows up 5 seconds after it launches). Picard is launched into the Nexus and can literally return to "any" point in time that he chooses and he decides to return with Captain Kirk to literally "right" before the villain shoots the missile to destroy the star.

Finally Kirk dies in the absolute lamest fashion possible. Crushed by a bridge, whispers, "It was....fun," dies. That's it.

I see what you are saying but it didn't bother me remotely as much as folks not giving a shite Data was dead.

The Nexus was goofy but at least they didn't come up with the 302 time travel plot to bridge the generations.

Expecting garbage. Star Trek has had too much success lately, time to return to its typical bullshite normality.

They have one good film, and then a couple movies later its all shite again.

Insurrection was so fricking terrible on terms of its production quality. It was like watching a 95 minute TNG episode...from the first season.

I loved Star Trek 2009, bit Into Darkness was pretty disappointing. I'm sorry purists like ace can't appreciate a good movie but I am looking forward to this one. The first preview sucked but the last one got me jacked up.

I'd move Motion picture into Tier 2, it's not great but it's significantly better than the other Tier 3s you listed.

You are probably right, I saw it in the theatre as a kid and remember being very very disappointed with it.

I don't think I have watched it in the last decade some of my memory of it has faded.

I do remember when Wrath of Khan came out it was so much better thus the low rating for TMP.
