If I told you my reaction to that quote (I think I saw it last month or so) was ambivalence, would you believe me?

The studio probably thinks the first 2 movies were too "Star Trek-y" too. I still watch an average of 10 to 12 TOS episodes per month. Good times...

Star Trek: Beyond (Belief)

So, they really do think they can just spit out all of the old stories in random order with subtle and not so subtle changes, and we're just going to eat it right up.

Oh, but Idris fricking Elba is in it. We're saved. Faggy movie board circle jerk - activate!

And just because the idiocrats flocked to it and RT thought it was good doesn't mean it is.

The first one was good, bu the second one was just a plot formula gimmick that threw up all over itself. It clusterfricks the franchise from that point forward.

It's "boldly go where no man has gone before," not "hackishly regurgitate old storylines to support your cocaine habit."

Wow. Let's dumb down a thing that's popular for not being dumb so we can get more butts in the seats, thereby cultivating human stupidity which is already being cultivated at record rates.

I liked it. There was never an origin movie about the academy years. At least the content was fresh.

But admittedly, with the time travel formula, you knew the abomination was coming and, sure enough, it did.

And there still hasn't been. Star Trek (2009) was an abortion - it hit all the action beats the millenials expect to see, without making a lick of sense.

I loved both wholeheartedly. It may not have been true to spirit of Star Trek, but I couldn't care less about that. Star Trek always bored me.

The new ones are made for Star Wars type fans and not Trek fans.

You should watch "First Contact" it was pretty good.

Star Trek 2 is the best though.

It's a trend to make Star Trek less hard sci-fi and more Star Warsy and more like your run-of-the-mill action film.

When the last one started with your standard James Bond mini-action sequence, it was the end of the line for sci-fi Star Trek films.

Yeah, I suppose so. The Beastie Boys segment was pretty cheesy.

Well in three hundred year maybe they will still be popular, like Beethoven is to some people. IDK.

You can't bitch about this then bitch about the new movie (that has no plot yet) not being like the original series. Roddenberry himself marketed the original series as "Wagon Train to the Stars". It sounds to me like they are trying to follow Gene's trail as closely as current audiences will allow.

And the thing is - it is not as if there aren't enough mindless action film franchises, filled with fakey, cartoonish special effects, rock/hip-hop soundtracks, with dumbed down writing and acting - (Transformers, FF, Jurassic Park, etc.), already - why did they have to involve the crew of the NCC-1701?

He was playing to the crowd - and he was trying to avoid a gigantic lawsuit - if you look closely, Star Trek was actually a series based strongly on the premise of the film Forbidden Planet.

As he was trying to sell the show, originally, as early as 1964 - he went with what was hot - Wagon Train - although, broadly, the pattern of a "continuing" journey was consistent.

But Star Trek never truly had the vibe of a Western (for example, as Star Wars and Firefly did). It was always more of a smart, extended Twilight Zone episode rather than a scifi environment with traditional western themes.
