I'd go further and say the Picard Q dynamic was probably the best of the entire star trek series spanning 50 years.
It's up there - I still favor the chemistry between the Big 3 +1 - real Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty - when they were on - it was magic. Although they were acting, the characters presented credibly as if they'd known each other for years - while Shatner catches crap for his theater "reach" acting, which drifted into campiness at times, he was pitch perfect for the over-the-top character. Nimoy delivered some of the finest television acting to date - done in the 60s and holds up against the best today has to offer. De Kelley was so consistent and believeable as McCoy, it defies description. And Jimmy Doohan brought a fire to Scotty that, somewhat paradoxically, increased dramatic tension, while also comforting with his technical skill and competence.
TNG's problem was there "too much" professionalism, and they hackishly tried to work around that, to mixed results. DS9 had plenty of fire with the civilian characters, plus fiery bridge officers in Kira and Worf. Voyager, minus the captain, was pretty consistent, but the captain ruins it, overall. Voyager had the second best doctor - and the doctor is probably my favorite non-TOS crewmember (perhaps tied with Data).

Didn't you give me some heart to heart talk about trolling on here not too long ago?

Agreed on the Doc. The one thing that kept me from getting into Voyager was that I never could get beyond how their Prime Directive seemed more aimed at casting as many different races as possible than sticking with good Star Trek story-telling.
Female to play the lead? Check
Black character? Check
Asian? Check
Caucasian? Check
American Indian? Check
Latino? Check
Mixed race? Check
And while we're at it let's throw in a quasi AI, a hot cyborg, an alien hippy chick and an alien comic relief for good measure.

Completely agree, it was boring and everyone on that bridge was interchangeable.
Voyager was a seven year disaster that ultimately killed star trek.
I agree about Kirk, Spock and McCoy...the dynamic between the three actors likely will never be repeated.

It was alright for what it was - I didn't like that it was an explicit rejection of what happened with DS9 - some derided it as a "floating gas station" - but with the Dominion War, there was real military drama - for the first extended period - in Trek history - some of the best moments from TOS and TNG were military set pieces (Balance of Terror -somewhat echoed in the film, TWOK, and NCC-1701D's longrunning battles with the Borg, again, picked for their best film in First Contact) - while Voyager was more of a return to episodic adventure and a relatively non-persistent environment, with the added thread of their survival and return home (which I didn't think was a terrible premise - and one of the stronger parts of the show - somewhat explains the compromises and hard choices they had to make, collectively).
And I can't help but acknowledge the solid acting by Picardo as the Doctor - he really stood out in the post-TOS era as really owning that character, again- up there with Picard, Data, Q, Sisko, Quark, Garak (Worf, at times) - all those actors wore those character fairly well. I guess Tuvoc is the other character that stands out - Russ was solid at times - they asked him to play a pure Vulcan when the template was set as Spock - that was an awfully big challenge and he did fairly well, week in and week out.

I immensely enjoyed the new star trek movies and I wish Abrams stuck around to complete the trilogy.

ST4: good, sort of funny
ST5: freaking stupid
ST6: good
ST7 (generations): good
ST8 (first contact): good
ST9 (erection): bad, not a movie, more like a long TV episode
ST10 (Nemesis): my god, they've ruined the whole franchise

Why do people say "so wait" or "wait" before they ask a question? What am I waiting for? Sounds pretty fricking stupid.

I love DS9, a lot of the political drama resonate even in this day and age. The two year war was even more amazing for the first time ever, I see the federation forces OUT in full force whopping arse or getting their arse kick.
I also love the Fleet to Fleet battle.
Sisko was not in charge of the entire War effort. If you watch, he was under the command of THREE admiral who was getting their asses kick on ALL fronts.
The federation while large and powerful had to be bloodied in real combat before they wise up and stop thinking "Oh we are good because we're the federation."
It really have a lot of lessons that still resonate in this day and age.
The most disappointing thing about Into Darkness was that the Enterprise never fire a single shot in the movie. Not one.

By all means, go to the theater like a lemming to see the same formulaic shite you get in any variety of other movies. Familiar characters are just a way to get you there. There is nothing new to see.
Yeah... let's all take a stand against Star Trek. Hopefully they will stop making shitty Star Trek movies with the new cast. Oh, wait... no... that means they stop making Star Trek movies PERIOD.
quote:
Yeah, because TNG was such a flop. Absolutely no one liked it.
And what good is TNG doing for Star Trek these days, being permanently shelved and all?
quote:
shite, even DS9 and Enterprise were pretty successful, if not movie-worthy.
Yeah... let's see how well a DS9 movie and/or an Enterprise movie would do. You know, after a 10 minute explainer at the beginning of each, explaining where Kirk, Spock and Picard are, and how they aren't in this one.
Get it through your skull. Original series characters, Kirk, Spock, etc... are THE strongest Trek brand going. In fact, it's the ONLY Trek brand going.
If you don't like it, that's fine. You don't need to watch it. But don't hate on those that do watch it. Given the choice between imperfect Trek or no Trek, I'll take imperfect Trek. I don't have any real problems with it anyway. You might think I'm a lemming for it, but it's okay. I think you're an a-hole. So it's all good.

I actually like the Star Wars reboot.. The 2009 movie actually made me a fan of Star Trek.
I went back and watched the older movies, read biographies and stories online etc..

And there still hasn't been. Star Trek (2009) was an abortion - it hit all the action beats the millenials expect to see, without making a lick of sense.
Made sense to me and I've watched TNG, DS9, and Voyager all the way through a few times each.
