My biggest issue (call it a pet peeve) with Wall-E is how comical (dare I say animated) the humans looked compared to everything else.

Beginning is the peak I agree. I enjoyed the entire movie though. But the best parts of the movie are the beginning and end. When he reads her note to him at the end of her adventure book, I lost it again.

Fantastic montage.

One thing though is that people always talk about how sad it is, and while it's sad on the surface (can't have kids, she gets sick and dies), IMO it's more sentimentally happy than anything else. He got to live out almost his entire life with the girl of his dreams, and even if they didn't meet certain goals (like having kids or making it to the Falls), they still had a life full of happiness and their own adventures. Like she told him in her book at the end.

Great movie.

ETA: Me and my 3 & 6 year old had the "death" and "why do people die?" conversation when we watched that movie.

The 6 year old had already had a dog die, but was a totally new concept for the other one. Hated spoiling that innocence in them, but it was a good opportunity, and backdrop, for that talk.

I think audiences make that connection with Carl. At the beginning, we feel like he feels: sad almost depressed. But the journey brings us to appreciate all the things (Adventures!) that they did share together. Which is brought to the forefront at the end when he sees the back of the book.

It was really sad when they stopped drawing her.

This is what I was trying to say. It was a good movie (Pixar has had better) but it definitely declined after the beginning, the greatest 10 minutes in animated film history.

How does it decline? You mean in the fact that the beginning was so monumentally fantastic that it had nowhere to go but to level out?

Because the rest of the movie was a fantastic, colorful, up and down adventure. If you can't see that, I'm sorry.

Just didn't think the rest of it was nearly is good. Started off as an A+ and the rest of the film was an A- imo.

I've posted this before, but I went to go see this in the theater the day of my mom's funeral. Had no warning.

I can laugh about it now, obviously

For adults, these kid-centric animated films rarely peak in their final act. The story formula accommodates that.

The character development process is the more creative part of the story for us. It is more fun in the beginning of these movies because you see a character's flaws and weakness, flaws that are usually unique and interesting (and often comparable to real life).

Since these types of films and such have to cater to children, as an adult you get less-interested towards the end of the movie because you know there's going to be happy ending. It's a sure thing.

Things I loved about Up:
- the beginning sequence, obviously
- the concept of the talking dogs
- the relationship arc between the old guy and the boy

Things I liked about Up but did not love:
- the boy's character (atypical in a good way, but not totally realistic)
- the old guy's character (became flat and overly grumpy)

Things I did not like about Up:
- the villain was absurd, which weakened the second act.

The boy's character became annoying at times, I agree.
As for Carl becoming flat and grumpy, that's part of the grieving process. He just lost the love of his life so he's not particularly interested in the things going on around him and he doesn't want to be bothered. He just wants the love of his life back and he knows he'll never have her again. He's combatting depression and mourning while all of this is going on. So I actually like his attitude throughout the film. If you notice in the opening sequence and when he's a child, he couldn't be more happy. He has all that he needs and he loves life. All of that was tied in with Ellie and when she died, that part of him died with her.

Yeah I wasn't crazy about the villain either.
