Mistake.

Seriously though, that's the best opening to any animated movie in history IMO. It's piece of art. Everything from the script, to the voice acting, to the perfect music throughout the scene. I don't think Pixar will ever be able to replicate that greatness.

If that opening scene doesn't make you shed a tear, you don't have a soul.

UP is one of the best animated movies ever made. Opening scene gets to me every time.

Agreed. I think the reason so many people connect to it is because we've all experienced some sort of loss like that whether it be a husband, wife, brother, sister, grandparent, or cousin that we were really close to. Part of the reason I choke up every time I watch it is because I've witnessed first hand both of my grandmothers watch the love of their lives die and be where Carl is. Just to be so lost without your other half. It's so incredibly heartbreaking.

I lose it when I watch that montage. The shot of them in the hospital after the miscarriage and the shot of him sitting in the funeral home are two of the most brutal to watch shots in the history of film. It kills me.

They took Disney's "let's kill opff the parent/parents" strategy and buried it. They pulled off finding true love, the incredible pain of infertility, realization that your dreams get buried by debt, and the even worse pain of losing your greatest love in 5 minutes of movie excellence.

Beginning is magnificent, but downhill from there.

This scene should be taught to first year students of every film school. This is how you make an audience connect to a character. One short scene and you're invested. Too many directors try to force empathy on the audience.

Up created a better love story in 5 minutes than Twilight did in 5 movies.

It was amazing that they could tell such a complete back story fraught with so much emotion in so short a time. It was truly a perfect cinematic moment.

I know it's on the other side of the spectrum, but the being of Toy Story is awesome. It gets a little lost in the shuffle because it was Pixar's first, but it sets the scene/tone perfectly for all 3 movies really.

The closest they've ever come to the greatness of Up was the beginning of Wall-E. In fact, all of Wall-E really. They managed to make the audience fall in love with a robot that never uttered a single full sentence. There wasn't a single line of dialogue in the first 20 minutes.

Of course, Wall-E is up there at the top. Some may even put it ahead of UP. But again, I just wanted to give Toy Story props.

As well it should. It was ground breaking for a lot of reasons.
