so in short, the US hired Del Toro, who was a Columbian Sicario, to help us track down and kill the Mexican boss because Del Toro had a personal reason to do it?

do i have that right?

no.

He was a prosecutor in Mexico whose family was murdered by the cartel so he took it upon himself to get revenge. He doesn't "work for" the Colombian cartel, he works for anyone and everyone who can help him get revenge.

I watched it the first time on Prime without knowing anything about it. Really enjoyed it. Then last night I thought about it again and pulled it up. This time I used the headphones so I could crank up the sound and turned on subtitles to catch the whispers. This time I really, really, really, really enjoyed it. I wonder where they shot the scene of going into Mexico. It was so realistic, including the speed bumps. And the score really turned me on. Surely they arranged an actual trip into Mexico with actual Federal Police etc etc.Wonder what that cost?

I'll try to find the article but the director did an interview saying how dangerous it was and they actually were shooting and got uncomfortable because some bad looking dudes started creeping up and they were pretty sure they were cartel guys.

I love Blunt and I liked the characters and I think Brolin and del Toro are great. But overall the movie didn't excite me. I think it's a genre thing, as I'm not interested in cartels or organized crime movies. One of those well made movies that I'll never see again.

Just watched Sicario a couple days ago. Amazing film work which really excited the senses. I thought the plot and character development were a tad lacking. You are left wondering why Blounts character is so weak and she never really proves herself. Movie should have been another hour long as it felt more like the greatest episode of Cops you'd ever seen.
Will definitely watch more of that directors films.

I posted in another thread about Sicario that it's one of my favorite movies of the last ten years. Everything about it was fantastic

i must have been drunk AF when i first saw it because i ripped it on here, but i saw it a month ago on Prime and LOVED it. have seen it a 3rd time and its even better.

One of my favorites as well. The score is amazing. Google "the Beast". The instrumental is unreal

Have you seen the original version? It takes place in Columbia and I suspect that the two combined will explain the plot trajectory a little better.

I find the Emily Blount character to be highly unorthodox and the decision to make her the protagonist ingenious. Great double cross on the part of the director.

Movie was just way too short though.

This is a lot of what made the movie. She was great as a surrogate for the general American population. Idealistic but naive about what actually goes on at the border. In the end she didn't really do anything, wasn't really asked to do much, del Toro just needed her signature so he could continue to do what needed to be done.

It was hilarious when she thought she would show she was cool and tough by smoking.

Agreed. Although I think her going back to smoking was a symbol of weakness like her being raped, caught on camera at bank, etc. I assumed she was a metaphor for weak willed Americans.
Really a cool movie.

IMO she was strong in her bubble even though that bubble was itself pretty rough compared to normal lives, but once she was out of that and exposed to reality she buckled and could not process the coldness of the decisions warranted by the brutality.

just surfing around and noticed this thread again. Had to laugh cause I've watched Sicario 4 times already, just finished looking up the list of award nominations and can't believe Del Toro didn't win the AA for Best Supporting Actor, although he did win a ton of awards from the smaller institutions. Now that the Adrenalin is pumping like crazy just thinking about that movie I will watch it again tonight.Kudos to everyone involved in that film.

Excited for the prequel.

I've only bought a few (2-4) movies in the last decade or so. I just rarely have the desire to actually own a movie and rewatch regularly. Sicario was one of those exceptions.

Benicio del Toro and Emily Blunt were really good in this film
Very true. Despite being a kilo post don't know why anyone would down vote that.

That year was stacked for supporting actors. De Toro is great but don't have any issue with the guys who got nominated ahead of him
