Sequels that have an argument for being better than the original are as follows:
The Godfather Part II
The Empire Strikes Back
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Aliens
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
The Dark Knight
Toy Story 3

No for me, though plenty prefer it for some reason.

Yes.

The Dark Knight
Probably, but I'm higher on Batman Begins than most.

Toy Story 3
I really need to rewatch it, because I remember being amazed at how much better it was than the second.

I don't count The Two Towers or Kill Bill 2 as sequels.

Austin Powers 2. Yes they recycled a lot of jokes from the first one, but it was still better executed.

Gremlins 2 (The New Batch)
No, it's how many sequels are "better" than the original. Better than.

And, of course, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is, by an order of magnitude, the finest film of the series, so, there's that.
I'm sorry Ace. I sort of disagree here. ST:TMP is the most pure in the ethos of Trek. Its all about exploring the Unknown. WoK is the best and most complete movie. Undiscovered Country is the most fun of the originals.
So I guess its not a full on disagreement

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Far better than the first
The Dark Knight: First one was good, sequel was fantastic
Empire Strikes Back: although A New Hope is also awesome
Spider-Man 2: more entertaining than the original with a better villain
X-2: Far better than the original which IMO isn't very good
Personally, I prefer The Godfather over The Godfather Part 2

The first one was better, it was the first movie for both Jean-Claude Van Damme & ICE-T.
