Therein lies its greatness. You don't get it apparently.

Ah! Like Airplane or Robin Hood-Men in Tights. Now I see it.

The fact that so few of the Hispanic characters are actually played by Hispanic actors is a large part of what makes it terrible.

Quit trolling

I don't think you know what trolling is. I sat down, starting watching a bad movie, and started a thread about the bad movie.

Then the vast majority of people responding agreed that it is a terrible movie. Just because you are one of the few that think it is a good movie doesn't make this a troll.

You all a bunch of frickin' assholes. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your frickin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!

Every athlete/rapper had a scarface poster in their house back when I used to watch MTV Cribs as a kid. I remember watching it finally and being pretty underwhelmed. I'll watch scenes of it from time to time but like every other gangster movie, the women in it are insufferable whiney bitches that drive me INSANE.

The funniest thing about Scarface, imo, is the fact that hood rats that slang absolutely love that movie, and think Montana is a badass, when the ending is about how much of a greedy fool he'd become. The just don't seem to understand the premise.

I have always really liked it. The fact that it is dated is a plus for me, truly a time warp type of movie. The twisted moral values of Montana, played well by Pacino, lend to its effectiveness - here was this scum of the earth murderer and drug kingpin but he refused to kill the wife and children, even though it would have dire consequences for him. Perhaps he didn't know the extent of it, but he had to know it wouldn't be good. The rags to riches aspect would be challenging for any time-limited movie to portray well, but I think the movie have it a good shot and hit on some key points, eg, Tony's ignorance, confusion and frustration with the tax/banking issues, his very gaudy sense of style and decor.

Does it seem over the top? Watching the documentary "Cocaine Cowboys" makes it seem not overly so. This was a very bizarre time period with Miami and South Florida being gorged with drug money and seemingly everyone was paid off or in on it. That documentary makes an excellent companion piece to the movie.

I think the only character I didn't care for was Frank Lopez, something didn't mesh between what is shown and what is intended.

One theme I liked best was the ability to have very comedic moments despite the very dark and underworld nature of the movie. They were funny but did not take away from the gravitas of it.

I don't think anything in the movie was played well. The terrible accents were, well, terrible.

I like the Budweiser cans on the dashboard. The scene was not believable at all.

I don't think any of it was meant to be comedic. I think it was just campy, with no intention of being so. It was just bad.

But hey, I appreciate your take on it. It probably doesn't help that I watched The Verdict two days earlier.

were Hispanic actors prevalent circa 1982?

Not like there were a lot of Javier Bardems known at that time. Best thing de Palma could get would be proven actors of Italian descent. Can't really fault him here.

I'm not too familiar with Cuban accents so it doesn't really stand out to me.

The cans did not vex me.

I strongly disagree. There were many humorous moments, even if darkly comedic. Not sure how one could feel otherwise.

Name 3. And let's be clear, I'm talking about moments that were meant to be humorous. Not the over-the-top acting by wedding guests in seeing a tiger on a chain. Not the old lady about to shite her pants in the club watching some very mundane "comedy" by Richard Belzer.

I'm sure they existed. I'm sure if de Palma really wanted to find talented Hispanic actors then they were out there to be found. The reason there may not have been prevalent Hispanic actors in the mainstream is they weren't cast which is the issue in the first place. It's kind of a circular argument.

Anyway, I'm not sure I buy the premise that there weren't any prevalent Hispanic actors in the first place, but I'm not a historian in that regard.
