I love revisionist history on movies. The first defense of a terrible movie is that it's meant to be funny and if you don't laugh then you don't get it.
Scarface was meant to be a serious movie soup to nuts. That makes it bad because its funny how bad it is.

The "you didn't get it" defense it pretty humorous too. It would be pretty hard to not get it. It's simple, and they hammer you over the head with it with the subtlety of a sledge hammer. I just think it's kinda stupid.

I never cared for it either. I see a few posters claim that it's a snapshot of a certain time and place. Fine. I was 11 when the 80's ended and didn't visit Miami until 2001 so that doesn't do anything for me. I didn't grow up in 1970's NYC either but I still enjoy the hell out of Goodfellas. There's more to a great movie than ambiance.

The entire dialogue between manny and tony on american girls, eating poosy, etc.

After Tony kills Frank and the bodyguard is sweating waiting to be next and Tony glibly spares him.

Tony showing up in the gaudy arse car and following dialogue with the chick.

Just right offhand.

One theme I liked best was the ability to have very comedic moments despite the very dark and underworld nature of the movie.

That might fly with the Sopranos but not with Scarface. There were a few throw away humorous moments, but comedy was not at all 'a theme' in it.

That moment did come to mind, in fairness

What's the fricking difference? It was consistent throughout, even in more subtle ways, Tony collapsing in the pile of coke, his wild antics during the firefight - much of Tony's dialogue is part humor.

But okay, not a theme, and according to others, completely non-existent.

All of that was supposed to be serious. If you are laughing at it then it's because it's absolutely horrible.

s this it? That's what it's all about, Manny? Eating, drinking, fricking, sucking? Snorting? Then what? You're 50. You got a bag for a belly. You got tits, you need a bra. They got hair on them. You got a liver, they got spots on it, and you're eating this frickin' shite, looking like these rich fricking mummies in here... Look at that. A junkie. I got a frickin' junkie for a wife. She don't eat nothing. Sleeps all day with them black shades on. Wakes up with a Quaalude, and who won't frick me 'cause she's in a coma. I can't even have a kid with her, Manny. Her womb is so polluted, I can't even have a frickin' little baby with her!

What you lookin' at? You all a bunch of frickin' assholes. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be. You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your frickin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!

Is Brian di Palma your uncle or something? Of course the last gun battle was meant to be dead serious.

Dead serious in the same way that cheesy action movie gun battle sequences are dead serious
