Well you get to see her naked this season, and no she doesn't have the body of a dude.

Finished season 3 last night, and I must say that was a truly bad season-ending episode. The lake scene, while already totally implausible, dragged on forever. And now we have to deal with Piper as some Michael Corleone character? If this show had any charm at all it was in following a nice girl coping within bad circumstances, and that's all gone

I agree. That lake scene was awful, but its just as well seeing as the writers failed, IMO, to follow a coherent narrative throughout the season. I also don't understand what the producers are doing, the flashbacks got out of control in this season. A lot of stupid story lines are forced while others aren't given enough attention too.

(SPOILERS: like the beds, they took them away and no one made a big deal and then they just seemed to randomly get them back without anyone noticing or caring. I get the company bought the prison and thats how the beds were replaced but the show didn't do a good job with that IMO. Unless I'm missing something or was too high or something.)

There were several instances that the writers did a poor job with, making this season unconvincing. They also totally cut out Pipers ex fiance and best friend aspect of the show. I thought Piper dealing with the outside world, like her relationship with those two, was one of the good, sincere parts of the show. That, and this stupid panty shite, has taken Pipers charm away (as you said). Pennsatucky is now the best part of the show IMO. She is a solid actress.

I thought it was stupid how the panty thing dragged on for the entire second half of the season. And I doubt that actual prisoners would be so easy to convince. "Hey, give me your underwear so I can sell them to perverts and make a ton of money. I'll pay you in ramen flavor packets!" Yeah, right.

Since when is everyone in prison not all about making a buck? It wouldn't have take 3 episodes for them to realize they're being screwed.

And I've said it before but I hate how they got rid of Bennett. Yeah, dude is a stand up guy taking full responsibility and then bails after meeting Daiya's shite head step dad? Yeah right. If anything, I was expecting him to take the kid and take off so that the kid wouldn't be around that. Dumb.

Yep, another instance the writers did terrible with. Daiya all of sudden is like "where is Bennett? Haven't seen him in two weeks." It felt like I missed something or skipped an episode, but I didn't, the writers just threw that at us. His character, as they developed over the first two seasons, would not have done that.

Exactly. The character deserved better than that.

I absolutely hated this part. I can't imagine Bennett doing that. At all. I could very much see the guy owning up to being the father, knowing it would cost him his job but allow him to keep the baby and be with Daiya. But not just cutting and running.

I'm in on the show because it's an easy binge watch. You binge one season, might as well keep going. Not like you have to wait 13 weeks to finish a season.

But the writing and acting fluctuations on this show are crazy.

It can be episode to episode, or scene to scene. You'll get some really good writing, then 5 minutes later, its absolutely atrocious. Most of the backstories are embarrassing, how bad they are.

Then there's a handful of really solid actors(Piper, Crazy Eyes, Morello, "Tucky"), a handful of meh actors(Red), and another group that are just absolutely awful. I see every single line and punctuation in the script when the "Poussey" chick is on the screen. The woman that plays Taystee can be funny, but she's awful anytime she has to show emotion.

I really appreciate them giving unknowns a shot, but damn...

One thing that stands out is Piper's transformation, let's just say she is starting to fit in more with the fellow prisoners.

To me that was laughable. She went from being a pussy to all of a sudden the ultimate badass.

Removing them was one of the better writing decisions. I can't stand Jason Biggs.

I hated anything dealing with Piper's family and friends on the outside except for her brother, and the writers apparently agreed.

Season 1 I enjoyed but the last 2 seasons just haven't done it for me.

The show has gotten less and less about Piper and now focuses equally or even more so on the other prisoners which hasn't worked for me.

The back stories made sense at first but now it really just seems like filler. I don't actually care why random inmate landed in prison unless it makes sense in the overall arch which I thought was about Piper.

The show had a dark and edgy tone to it in season 1 which just doesn't seem to be there any more. This season we got panties, lesbians and a pregnancy... the show was better when Piper was fighting for her survival.

Piper is gonna get out of prison eventually. They have to establish an audience relationship with the other prisoners in order to keep the show going.

ETA: Although, I'm sure Piper will do something stupid somewhere along the line to get her more time.

Overall I liked the 3rd season. I hated the Vee storyline so I liked it better than Season 2.

Regarding the writing, I also find it frustrating at times, but I wonder if it's because we're not used to (and frankly, maybe some just don't like) writing from a female point-of-view.

However I agree that the idea of two guards becoming obsessed (or falling in love with) Daya was ridiculous. But I'm OK with the Bennett story because IRL there are many stories of people getting left at the altar (i.e., deciding at the last second to not follow through). Bennett reached his tipping point and bailed, and they set that up with the flashback when he dove away from the grenade while someone else dived onto the grenade to save everyone.

Yeah part of the story is Piper slowly realizing that she's not the nice girl she thought she was.

Piper was only in prison for a year, so it if was just telling her story then they woulda/shoulda planned it as a single season (like a British series). But this is America, so they will stretch it out as long it is popular and helps brings subscribers to Netflix. It will be just like Weeds, going on and on. By the time it's done, TV Piper will have served a 10-year sentence!

That kinda supports my point. The show should have stopped after Pipers story was up. They have spun the show off into this teenage girl drama bs.

You not liking Jason Biggs does not equate to the show being better off without him. And no, the writers totally removing a dynamic of the show without the slightest explanation is not a good decision. Perhaps they are setting something up for season 4 and I just need to be patient.

This season was easily the worst so far. It moved in no direction and accomplished nothing with any singular story.

Spoilers

Between Red becoming cook again (which btw hispanic cook just giving up was totally unconvincing) and the story line with Norma (horrible character) and the cult the show seemed to be going nowhere. Why did Norma walk out on Red only when they delivered all the premade meals? She seemed fine when she thought it would be like the old days but now with the premade meals she was like ok I'm going start a cult now. Randomly, mid way through the season, Piper's like lets start selling panties. Could have done a better job explaining why the prison was about to shut down and the new changes with the now corporate owned prison (like I referenced earlier with the beds).
End Spoilers

They won't be able to match what they did in the first season. Perhaps all Jenji Kohan has in her is a couple of seasons and then it will fall apart like Weeds did. I enjoyed the first two seasons so I'm hoping the show can recover in Season 4.

watched the first 3 episodes of season 3 today. is it just me or is piper getting uglier? maybe she always looked like that but during this season, woof. I still like this show but two story lines suck and are killing it imo. piper and 70's show donna's little drama is stupid and waste of quality air time that could be going to better characters. the other one that is ridiculous is the guard and the Spanish chick he got preggers (i'm bad with names but y'all know everyone i'm talking about here ). there is no way a guy that good looking, no homo, would ever risk his job, let alone get engaged to an ugly, boring chick who is in jail nonetheless. that relationship is beyond retarded.

I disagree here. I actually really enjoyed the final scene. It was a nice sense of closure to all the conflict and difficult times the inmates have gone through. You finally got to see what true happiness looks like in their eyes…for us, it's trivial and just a simple part of life we take advantage of

3rd season was great, much better than season 2 IMO. I love how it's become more of an ensemble as opposed to Piper being the main focus.
