CURRENT DISCUSSION

Season five:

Episode 9: "Late Editions" - With Steintorf ordering Rawls to initiate 'creative' remedies for the rising crime rate, Freamon's vigilance pays off with a promising lead, sending Sydnor and the department into overdrive.

Episode 10: "30" - Carcetti maps out a damage-control scenario with the police brass in the wake of a startling revelation from Pearlman and Daniels. Their choice: clean up the mess...or hide the dirt.

AND SEASON FIVE AND THE SERIES AS A WHOLE.

If you don't have time to watch the episodes, check out Wikipedia for each episode (also, "The Wire Wiki" has solid write-ups as well)...they do a great job of detailing and explaining everything that happens in the episode. Here they are for these episodes:

Late Editions

30

On the menu to watch this week:

Nothing...we are DONE!

Wikipedia for these episodes:

Discussion on this batch of episodes due to start N/A. Enjoy the show.

If you've seen the series, obviously the discussion will lean into spoilers at some point. So let's try to give some effort to at least label future spoilers since there seems to be a good bit of people in here watching for the first time. Which leads me to my next point....

Note to people who haven't seen the series:
Please feel free to join in at any time, but know that there will be spoilerish things discussed since this is a REWATCH. So while you may not get too many things spoiled on you for the most part, eventually the discussion will begin to tie in with future happenings on the show. So be prepared for that. However, I actually think this could be a really cool way to experience the series for the first time, so you're more than welcome to participate (for example, I'd be in for this even if I hadn't already seen it).

Miscellaneous info

There is a Wiki site for the show; it's called The Wire Wiki, and is a pretty good source of information for those who need it. It's also where I will get some of the episode summaries/synopses posted above. Regular Wikipedia for the series is also a pretty good source of information, especially the episodes themselves (and I will use them as well).

VIEWING THE SERIES
- HBOgo - All episodes are on HBOgo. So if you have HBO, then you have HBOgo. Or if you know someone who will give you their password, you can access the show that way.
- Amazon Prime - I'm told all episodes are also on Amazon Prime. So if you have a subscription to that, or know someone who will let you have their password, you can access the show there as well.
- DVD - If you want to go old school and buy the DVDs, here is the series on Amazon.

Just caught up on Criminal Minds and finished Master Of None over the weekend, so this is next up on our list. Will be a first-time watch though.

Cokes,

I understand it's a rewatch so obviously there's spoilers. But how strict does/will discussion focus only on the episodes of that week's assignment?

I guess what I'm saying is....is this thread for this week going to focus ONLY on discussion about these 2 episodes? I've seen most of the series so I'm not worried about being spoiled on stuff, I'm just curious how on topic these threads get or if people talk about the series overall a good bit as well.

Throw me in the mix, I've never watched it and I've known for a few years now how this is regarded as one of the GOAT shows.

This America, man.

So I was thinking about this scene this morning. The American dream, more or less, is the idea that if a person works hard enough there is opportunity to succeed. To the people in the ghetto this is their hope, but they don't see themselves as having the same opportunities. They have to steal or sell drugs or otherwise engage in nefarious activity in order to succeed. Although it is destructive no other options offer the same type of advancement. So when McNulty asked the guy why he let Snotboogie sit at the card game, the guy was really saying that he didn't want to take away that part of the American dream that belonged to them. Everyone should at least have the opportunity to sit at the table.

This seem like a bit of a stretch to anyone? I think my explanation my be falling apart a bit at some point.

I've seen most of the series so I'm not worried about being spoiled on stuff, I'm just curious how on topic these threads get or if people talk about the series overall a good bit as well.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the majority of discussion early on will be focused on the specific episodes. As the series goes on, there will likely be some discussion about the overall plot(s) and how the current episodes reflect in that regard (maybe with foreshadowing and stuff like that).

Outside of a few major things, I don't think too much could really be spoiled too far into the future based on how the show is set up. Each season is so sort of different from the others that they should be pretty well contained discussion-wise.

However, all that being said, this is a rewatch thread, so obviously the risk of spoilers will be present. Maybe at the very least we could label spoilers for the people who haven't seen the show. I'll add that to the OP.

also this may be a dumb question...it says discussion begins the 14th.

I was under the impression you'd give the assignment and people discuss those 2 episodes throughout the week leading up to next week's episodes.

I liked the scene, but didn't truly appreciate it until a rewatch.

Baltimore (in The Wire) is this artificially created universe - that is based heavily on real life in Baltimore. This statement, "Got to. It's America, man." does speak volumes. At the end of the day, these common street kids have some sort of code - some of that good government, civics bullshite in school has sunk in.

Snot boogie was offered the chance to do better, always failed, and then earned a beating. But, according to this witness, it wasn't right that he was killed for it. And, we all, pretty much agree.

And everyone in the show is either trying to get along with the system or get ahead in it - whichever side of the line they're on. There are few moral judgments made during the show (sorry if spoilerish) - and this rare one is done early for a reason - framing.

And so well written and acted. It's also strange to see Bodie as a rookie dealer in the pit in the first episode - just barely above hopper.

Another great framing quote from this episode:

quote:

Carver: You can't even call this shite a war.

Hauk: Why not?

Carver: Wars end.

Amen, my brother.

I'm very excited for the next 30 weeks. This will be my third viewing of the best television show ever made, but it's been about 3 years since I last watched it.

Close. The weekly discussions are basically for the previous week's episodes. Doing it that way allows everyone to have watched the episodes (in theory) before discussion takes place. This week is a bit confusing since it's week one and there are no previous episodes.

So basically, discussion for the first two episodes will begin trickling in this week, and will hit full stride next week (along with the new episodes being assigned). That's why I have it split in the OP with what's "on the menu" for this week, and "current discussion," as they are two different things. If you're still confused, it'll make sense once we get a few weeks in.

Another great framing quote from this episode

See, shite like this is why I'm pumped about this rewatch. I feel like there are a lot of things I missed the first time around...or maybe things that I caught, but didn't realize how powerful they were.

That's one reason I feel like this thread could be cool for first-time watchers, since they'll be able to participate in episode discussions, whereas this board didn't really exist for most (all?) of the series as it aired.
