First time I watched I was like what the frick because Season1 was the real deal and it was so out the blue with the docks.

But I appreciated S2 more and more once the series was over and after the rewatch

I was introduced to the Wire about 7 years ago when I was in Pakistan . I barely slept. Would watch all day at work then when we got off

I didn't care too much for season 2 at first watch but it's my second favorite season now.

Okay, the OP is updated with new episodes to watch for this week.

We have to try to stay on schedule though...I see people getting WAY ahead of where we are. Soe for note, discussion for the first two episodes officially starts today. This week's assignment is E3&E4, and discussion for those will start next Monday. I know being that this was the first week, it's a little confusing with the pace and timeline, but now that we're into week two, it should make more sense.

We need to stay on topic for the current episodes, or else the discussion will get all jumbled and will have no flow and we won't all be talking about the same things. It will also suck for those who are on pace with the thread to see all kinds of things being discussed that they haven't watched yet.

I will add my comments on episodes one and two this morning (and hopefully others will as well).

Did my homework last night. I forgot how great this show was.

I forgot how significant Episode 2 was - the scene in the pit with McNulty, Bunk and Dee, happening the same time Bubs is doing the red hat routine. We didn't even know who Wee Bay, Stinkum and Little Man were before then.

The scene between Daniels and his wife, hopefully not spoilerish, but for first-time watchers, Daniels' wife is a politician - the whole discussion over his being in a situation where he seemingly has nothing to gain and everything to lose, "You cannot lose if you do not play" - this is juxtaposed with the opening scene of the series, "Got to. This America, man." Even uses the same gaming imagery.

The chicken McNugget scene is a classic bit, as well. There is a whole parallel analysis of food in The Wire - just as food is almost an additional character in The Sopranos, in The Wire, there is this subversive introduction of food concepts, particularly local Baltimore cuisine.

And more than almost any other show, the City of Baltimore becomes a character in the show, as well - in a similar way that Los Angeles is a character in The Shield.

These first 2 episodes were directed by Clark Johnson. He goes on to direct an additional Season 1 episode, E5, "The Pager" and does not return to the director's chair until the series finale in Season 5. However, he does have a role in the main cast for Season 5 as Gus Haynes, the Baltimore Sun editor struggling to manage publisher expectations with journalistic ethics.

In addition to directing both the Pilot and Finale of The Wire, he also directed the Pilot and Finale of The Shield, which, in my mind, puts him in the running for GOAT television director from a pure quality standpoint.

They set up the show so well and so quickly. I forgot how quickly they establish all of the characters.

Yes they did.

From the beginning you could tell Dee was soft as hell and wasnt made for the game. When Bunk and Jimmy had him in the interview room running game, dont talk to the cops ever without a lawyer.

Prez was useless as frick on the streets. Herc and Carver wasnt that far behind being they decided on the 2am research. Anyone else think they could have just jumped in the car before the bottles started flying.

And Daniels with the "story" for Prez

I wouldn't call him soft. He was just too smart for the game, if that makes sense. He knew the game, how it's played, and how it ends.

Come on Cokes - keep it together brother. We're talking S1E1 and S1E2 this week.

Yeah, that's my bad. Was going too fast this morning and put the wrong episodes...the OP is correct though.

I've been a little busy this morning, but will add my comments in a bit, then respond to everyone else's.

Watching the first couple though, I forgot just how good this show was. I'm glad this is the one we're rewatching.

What stood out most to me as a first time viewer is how bad Baltimore's strip clubs must be. These are drug gang ballers and that club in episode 1 was terrible.

Well it's an African-American strip club in the early 2000's. Not sure what you are expecting....

It's one of their front businesses - they don't care as long as they can wash cash through it.

plus it is in a shitty neighborhood and these guys grew up in the projects, not every strip club in this country is an upscale gentleman's club.
