Nerdist Review
LINK

quote:

20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four is somehow both completely unfinished and yet still deemed suitable for people to see.

quote:

, a tipsy Reed, Johnny, Victor, and Reed’s old pal Ben decide to go to the other dimension themselves. As you might imagine, this doesn’t end well for any of them, or for Sue who has shown up in the lab back on Earth to try to bring them back. They’re all bestowed with incredible and rather terrifying new abilities, but none more so than Victor — but he’s barely in the movie so I won’t talk about him.

quote:

When’s the last time a big superhero movie by a major studio, especially a rebooted origin story, came in under 2 hours? Ant-Man was 1 hour and 57 minutes, but that was also the eleventh film in a franchise. Fantastic Four is an anemic 100 minutes and the story suffers for it. There were reports that the film was being edited frantically up until this week; I have to wonder how bad the rest of the movie was if Fox felt like less was more to this high of a degree.

quote:

There’s a lost Fantastic Four somewhere on the cutting room floor I’d like to see. I’m not saying it would be good, but at least it would be a full film.

I liked him in everything I've seen him in. The wire, FNL, Fruitville Station, Chronicle.

That said I have no desire to see this movie, and I'm a big comic book guy

Damn not sure what happened to Trank, seems like the rumors about him showing up to sets drunk were true.

This is the same guy that directed Chronicle, seems like he had potential

When I read about how Reed,Johnny and Victor get drunk because the "government" wants to take their project away-so they decide to use it, I chuckled at how art imitates life.

Is it in the Catwoman/Elektra realm?Or is it the X3/Origins space? Are the first two F4 movies better? That's the question.

I'm going with Last Airbender bad. All the reviews are saying this movie has no positive qualities, not even campy or so stupid it's funny. It's just bad like we all feared.

i mean, it kind of is unfortunate that Trank is such a train wreck. other franchises have had a lot of success by going with indie directors and giving them a big shot. Look at James Gunn, Colin Trevorrow, even the Russo brothers to some degree.

He had potential if he could just handle his shite. but I think it was a case where the guy was very privileged and didnt give a shite.

To be fair to Trank, Kinberg and Slater wrote the script...and Fox stepped in and reshot the whole 3rd act.

the story thats been posted is they had to. the things Trank shot were horrible. Kinberg basically ran the shoot anyway since Trank was often late to set and didnt have an idea on how to shoot certain things.

kinberg is also one of the producers on the star wars spinoff that Trank was supposed to shoot. something tells me its Tranks fault, not Foxs that this turned into an abomination. hence why he get yanked from star wars.

This movie didn't deserve a reboot. Nobody gives a shite about the Fantastic Four.

I am fully open to the F4 story if adapted to the movie screen under the direction of Disney/Marvel. Not really necessary, but I am open to it.

They did before Fox made three terrible movies...and in the age we live in, the F4 IP is as relevant as ever.

and since we're talking about no one gave a shite about Guardians of the Galaxy, Kick-arse or The Walking Dead before their awesome adaptations.

Saw it tonight.

Those of you taking pleasure in the failure of this film will be happy to know that I was able to park in the closest parking space to the door and the showing ended up having about 20 to 25 people in attendance.

The Trank portion of this film is a really entertaining and interesting alternate universe version of the Fantastic Four. I've never seen a more serious take on superheroes (and I don't mean that in a bad way). The writing, direction, and acting was like watching a sci-fi film that intended to keep things light until the "and then something terrible happened" moment arrives.

The Doom character is pretty subdued. He's not the douche hacker that people feared. Ben Grimm is a quiet but likable character. Reed is the closest to the Marvel character of them all. I bought into this young college kid growing into becoming the Reed of the comics. Sue was smart, and real.

The bit about them getting drunk and going for a joyride in the negative zone is way overblown. It's not that they're drunk, it's that their project is being taken away from them and they're about to become obscure footnotes in the greatest scientific achievement in history.

Sue not going on the trip is a minor infraction when you're dealing with an FF that is so far into an alternate reality. Her powers are tweaked a bit, but it works.

Ben is the most tragic Thing that I've seen outside of This Man This Monster. His voice is extremely different from what you'd expect. I think his lack of accent is more jarring than his voice not having the gravel we'd expect. It is modulated though, it's not a normal voice.

The involvement of the military is a very interesting take. The discovery of the powers and the military link is what takes the film into a pretty dark place. Still, it's interesting and entertaining.

Then, unfortunately, we get to the "big finish". Once the studio steps in, we get a terrible, cliche, nonsensical, big superhero punch out. The action is terrible, the dialogue is suddenly cliche (after an entire movie filled with realistic performances) and Doom's powers are all over the place. Reed is basically a man who can punch you from twelve feet away. All of a sudden everyone is a lame comic book character shouting phrases about teamwork and "clobberin" people.

I think that if Trank had been given full rein till the end, we would've had an interesting take on the FF that would've pissed off comic book fans but interested some critics and a portion of the general public. Instead we got 3/4 of a new take on superhero films and 1/4 of a lame superhero movie written by someone who's seen a few Marvel cartoons and thought that they could wing it.

I would love to see Trank's full film. It wouldn't be the greatest film ever, but it would be a complete film and would be well worth a watch.

I really think that the studio did more damage than good with their "salvage" job.
