Definitely agree on both the Mayfair Witches and on Confederacy of Dunces Great New Orleans characterization in that one.

Running Man by Stephen King/Bachman is a good fast paced read with no sequels. Santiago by Mike Reanick is my favorite book ever, also no sequels, it's sci-fi/fantasy. Reanick also wrote the Oracle trilogy, very good too imho.
