I have been stunned by some of his shots and peformances.

Not for nothing, but Malcom X and Summer of Sam are 2 of the best looking/sounding films I've ever seen - I mean - content aside, he is able to convey emotion and tell a story with just the camera lens about as well as anybody.

If he weren't such a complete douche (and, to be fair, most auteurs/great directors have off-putting personalities - Billy Wilder is a rare example of what seems to be a nice guy, with that level of skill.)

I don't agree with his politics or how he interacts with people, but he's an amazing director. I couldn't give a rat's arse about Malcolm X, but that movie was beautiful and entertaining. I lived through the Summer of Sam and enjoyed that film immensely.

I hate him just because of this.

Shut the frick up, dude. His guy just got squashed on national TV, and he couldn't keep his mouth shut.

I don't care how douchey he is in real life, Do The Right Thing will always be a masterpiece

Its defeintly his best movie and one I've always liked.

Other than that I'm with Clint Eastwood in thinking Spike Lee should shut his face.

I don't think he hates white people or anything. He just doesn't accept warmed over platitudes regarding race. do the right Thing, to this day, is the single greatest film about race relations in this country, and part of that is that the racists in the film are cartoon villains. And he's clear that Mookie is just as prejudiced against the Italians as Pino is against the blacks in the neighborhood.

I mean, how likeable is Buggin' Out anyway? He picks the fight with Clifton. He tries to start a boycott of Sal's. He eggs Radio Raheem on, agitating him until the cops show up. He's just a live wire, attuned to even the slightest irritation. The film also touches the live wire of CLASS, which is even more of a no-no to talk about than race in this country. It's just a great, great film.

But what I like about Lee so much is he didn't get pigeon-holed as the "black director". He made some other race relation films like the sorely underrated Bamboozled, and films about the "black experience" like School Daze, He Got Game, and of course Do the Right Thing.

But he's made excellent genre pictures like Clockers and Inside Man. He made one of the best post-9/11 films in 25th Hour (technically about Ed Norton going to jail, but really about post-9/11 NYC).

Spike Lee can make a f'n movie. Even his failures are at least interesting. He's greatest virtue is that he doesn't ever play it safe. Lee goes for the jugular in all of his films.

I think if I had floor seats I would yell just as much as I do now. So I don't blame him for that. We scream at the players from the upper decks, damn straight I'm going to keep yelling in the Richer seats.

Love Inside Man. A very well made movie that could have been complete crap with a lousy director.

Summer of Sam is is top notch all the way around in my book. The Baba O'Riley sequence accomplishes so much in that 3-4 minutes.

I mean, at some point, sure.

But this was Pippen and the 90's Bulls.

This would be the equivalent of me, as a Notre Dame fan, on the field talking shite in the face of Alabama at the 2012 national title game in Miami.

It would make me look like a goddammned moron.

Crooklyn is still my favorite although I recognize Do the Right Thing and Macolm X may be his best work.

He's actually an underrated actor I hope one day he stars in a movie he didn't write direct or produce

Inside Man
Was awful and made no sense, except to be an ethnocentric masturbation fantasy.

And Summer of Sam was a root canal that never ended.
