I never had any preconceived notions about Surfin' Bird, but I'm sure the tank blasts added to it in Full Metal Jacket would have made me appreciate it more, if I had had them.

I don't know if it necessarily changed the way I thought of the movie but..

A Real Hero by College will forever and always be linked with Drive

As far as pop/rock songs - obviously films like The Graduate and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid made some ripples, but more modern films tend to have more of a musical sensibility.

Tarantino's films Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction did amazing things with songs. Marty's films always do interesting things with music, but Goodfellas remains his opus. Not a song, but every song in it is influenced by this.

I give Grosse Point Blank an honorable mention here - scored by Joe Strummer, it was expected, but an excellent use of the indivdual songs, to the point I generally recall the film when I hear a song from the soundtrack. The Farrelly brothers also did some great things with pop/rock songs in their films.

First thing that came to my mind when I saw the title. Phenomenal scene.

Since that was posted I'll go with 2 that absolutely should be in this thread:

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Show me the way home from Jaws

The Penguins- Earth Angel from Back to the Future

If you didn't already think it was a sad fricking song, you definitely did after Leaving Las Vegas.

My dad had me play that song at his funeral because of that scene. I grew up on that entire soundtrack.

YES the Fast Times Phoebe Cates pool scene and that song are inexorably linked in my mind.

Definitely. I'd go far as to say it irreparably ruined the song.
