But I never really liked the LOTR novels. Reading them was more like a chore than enjoyment.

To each his own. It was one of the only books I've ever read that once I started, my body had to remind me to eat.

I saw an ad last night for Winter's Tale and can't wait for this one. Per the wif a NYT writer says the movie may be better than the book. That would take a pretty incredible movie since the book is is fantastic. It's also very long and packed full of detail so the movie can only be a small part of the entirety of the novel. After reading a preview in the LA Times I'm thinking this could actually be a good flick. Certainly it has an outstanding cast.

I'm surprised no one has said Psycho

Who here has read the book?

I haven't, but some who have think the book handles certain things better, although others might consider it cheating -- e.g. "Norman sat down with his mother and they began a conversation".

I liked the ending in The Firm better in the movie, and I hate Tom Cruise movies.

I was coming here to say Field of Dreams also. It is based on the book, Shoeless Joe. The movie is just better.

Has anybody read Deliverance? I lean toward the book being better, but do any of yall think different?

I'll go with Star Wars. There actually is a book, written by a fairly well known sci-fi author and it came out before the movie. It's pretty bad.

This is where the Star Wars book lost me:
