The Princess Bride, that book was awful, and I mean awful.

Moby Dick, worst book ever written, if it weren't for the movie the book would have been lost in obscurity for all time.

With the way everyone hated the 3rd Hunger Games book, I'd think the movies will be better.

I think part of this has to do with whether you read the book or watched the movie first.

Thats a very good point.

For example: I read The Lord of The Rings after seeing the movies. I love the movies. The books were very difficult to get through for me. It wasn't because of the quality of the books; I found myself throughout the reading trying to relate what I saw on the pages to what was in my mind from the films. You have to understand that, despite the depth of the movies, they barely scratched the surface to the depth of the books. If you did a literal adaptation, the movies would've been 24 hours long.

That being said, my original take on The Natural doesn't change. The story is either one of overcoming your own hubris and ultimate adversity (The movie) or a modern retelling of Arthurian tragedy (the book). I like the movie better.

Those books are bad.

Also, how the hell are they turning that last one into two movies? Can this trend please be stopped?

The book was out for 100 years before the first movie adaptation was made.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Candyman. Maybe.

I don't believe that a book that had been around and well known for 100 years before the first movie was made adapting it as well as being considered a literary classic and on the reading list of every high school and college American literature class should have any problem avoiding becoming "obscure".

I think an argument can be made for Apocalypse Now, as well.

The book was not well known until the early 20th century, critics did not like it all when it first came out, I think Melville actually went into a depression over the general reception of the book. It is an awful book, there's probably 150 pages of story and 500 pages of bullshite about whaling.

all of this. The Godfather novel is excellent, and iirc its essentially the story of Godfather 2(movie) as well.

Jaws was absolutely horrible. half the book was about hooper and brody's wife having an affair.

There are a few "classic" books I wouldn't wish my enemy to have to read. I'll save everyone from flaming me in this thread, however.

I had to read Heart of Darkness as a freshman in high school because the lady in charge of the AP English dept was crazy. My 9th grade English teacher told us she did her graduate dissertation on the novel and spent half of the first semester trying to explain it to us. Its not a novel that most 14 year olds have any hope of grasping.
