Not too sure about this.

I think I'm just to the point that I'm just over her. That's probably awful to say. I just don't see things working out well for her if she's chasing around directors like a crazy person. I'm not really upset with her being upset with Don. Just acting a little bit like a nutcase.

That good bye with Sally from episode 2 was tremendous

Yeah it was.

But I don't really see this SC&P deal ending well for Don. No booze and a script for meetings? Working under Lou? I'm pulling for him, but I don't know if he's ready to handle the complete shift in his work life. Sally needs to come live with him to keep him straight.

I'll at least enjoy him sneaking around the office trying to not get busted doing all the wrong things. With the help of Stan and Co.

Right now I almost hope the prostitution thing comes back to bite Joan in the arse. I don't know how she can be on her moral high horse with Don.

I get that Joan is a "businessman" now. She is climbing the ladder and takes her ownership in the company very seriously. But Don was the one partner who urged her not to sell her body for a client, right? Is she just let down and betrayed by his subsequent behavior and meltdown? Or is it all business for her now?

quote:

I will say Weiner has done a great job turning almost every fan back to Don's side after he was such a miserable human last year. That worries me that he could be setting us up for a Don collapse

Yep.

Though the Divine Comedy bit from last year gives me hope. Last year was certainly rock bottom (though I feel like we could have said that before). Now passing on Neve Campbell and the hooker, limiting his drinking, coming clean with Sally and Megan, eating shite at SC&P seem like Don working off his sins in Purgatory.

Don in the bullpen smoking joints with Stan and Ginsberg will be great. Would love to see Ginsberg and Draper troll the shite out of Peggy.

At first I hated Don accepting those terms, but then I realized he feels that he has to rebuild at SCP. He will accept any terms required to get a foot back in the door, knowing his immense talent will bring him back to the top as long as he can control his demons.

I get that but I'm trying to understand why Don wants to be there in particular so bad? He has agencies dying to have him.

There is no way he would've accepted that deal. They absorb his options if he fricks up? He reports to a non-partner? Give me a break. He could've simply said no and that they have to buy him out. They didn't want to, or maybe couldn't even afford to so that just seemed too unrealistic.

It's likely just the long game by the writers for Don to come out the victor. Like someone else said, people will refer to Don and Lou will eventually lose it. Plus Don will obviously do something genius and bring some huge client, so the show will end with Dons ultimate redemption.

Totally agree with everyone about Joan. I felt like I must've missed something for her to be acting like such a count. She was still answering phones last episode and now she's going to tell Don what's up? He initials aren't even in the name.

Roger was awesome. The "he gone" line was funny as hell and he didn't even need to hear much about what happened to say it

Drop the Betty story, I was annoyed when they left the office setting to go to that boring shite. Sally is where it's at for good story and especially with Don.

I can't believe there will only be 5 episodes to wrap this series next year.

Eta: Hopefully Cutler gets a bit of comeuppance as well. Roger and Don can do some damage together.

Just got around to watching the episode. And I figure this is an appropriate time to ration out my "frick You"s for this episode:

quote:

As far as Don taking the offer, I figure he knew they made that kind of unreasonable offer in order to try to run him off. That chances were good that he doesn't take it and tells them to go frick themselves. But instead he gives them the ol' frick you by agreeing to it and I'm willing to bet he succeeds like a champ when Lou quits over his mere superior presence. Better yet, watch Don dip into the media portion of the agency that's been neglected with Harry and watch it turn into an insanely money maker for the company. Yes I'm still hoping for a little bit of a redemption arc for Don.

I could have saved my self from writing my paragraph

There will be 7.

They are doing the "Breaking Bad" style "final season". 7 this year for the first half and 7 next year for the second half.

So, we actually get one more episode (14 vs. 13) for the final season but AMC is splitting them up into two parts.

I hate it.

They need to just end the show and nut drag it out like that. I hated having to wait a yeat for breaking bad. I can see putting the second half im the fall but a year is too long.

Weiner, better have one hell of a cliffhanger to keep people's interest. Mad Men isn't a story that lends itself to being split like this.

I had the weirdest reaction to the beginning of this episode. It just seemed like the acting, particularly John Hamm was ultra wooden. It was almost like he was doing a casual read-through.

I'm not an ultra religious watcher of Mad Men, but I'd say I've seen most episodes from most seasons (mostly on the Sunday morning replays). And I've never had that kind of reaction to the acting before.

I haven't seen anyone else with this reaction so maybe it was just me. But I just got such a strong vibe that this was an actor just reading lines and it took me out of the flow of the show.

Wow. Don falls another rung. How is the last season exposing his ever deeper desperation?

This episode set forth two possible paths.

1. Don has been effectively emasculated, gave in immediately to save his pride, and will be a good little worker bee.

2. Don gave in easily to get his nose back under the tent, is hugely pissed, and is about to go Machiavelli on Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Price's asses.

I predict option #2.

Its still not clear to me why everybody in the office hates don now. He shite the bed with the Hershey's thing but that shouldn't be enough to crap on him like this.

Roger has been a mess for all 7 seasons.

And the guy who replaced Don is a worthless prick.

Joan hates him because he killed the Jaguar deal, after she slept with their executive. I hope Don gets assigned to Avon because that will lead to some moments with those two.

Peggy's life sucks, she accomplished nothing significant while Don was gone, and now that he's back it's just another hurdle she has to climb.

Bert is only worried about two things: $$, and the public perception of the agency. Don's actions in the Hershey meeting lost him a lot of points with Bert, but as Roger pointed out it would cost them a ton of money to buy his shares out and that's what he cares about more than anything.

Cutler is in a perpetual power struggle with the old Sterling Cooper executives (especially Roger), and Don coming back is another ally for the old guard.

He's a Duck guy, what do you expect?

He's the type of ad man whose failed his way to the top. SC&P knows that he isn't going to go off the edge and damage the imagine of the agency. Meanwhile they are lacking the edge that they had with Don.

It's funny you mention this because I'm currently reading the Comedy and in Purgatorio right now. I believe Weiner has said that the Comedy has influenced him greatly with Don (along with A Tale of Two Cities). The fact that last season opened with the first tercet of Inferno is a real sign. If this is the case, Don should rise up and achieve Paradise at the end.

The flip side is that with the conditional terms he accepted he can EASILY bury himself if he pisses off Joan or Cutler or whomever. It will be so easy to fire him with all the conditions they gave him upon his return. That really worries me.

Interesting. Peggy was on Fergeson or someone last night and said they only have 5 hours next year. I was bummed. I hope you're right.

Hopefully, because taking that pathetic offer made no sense otherwise. He could've and should've said "frick You, buy me out".

Like I said earlier, the writers are playing the long game. Lou is going to suffer

And the way Joan and Peggy acted, I hope they get theirs too.

it really is a pain in the arse and I think it's turned some people away from watching Mad Men. Right when we get invested into this season it will end.

Does he though? Roger said that offer Don had in his hand from the other agency was crap.

As much as I hate it happening to Mad Men, hopefully if there is interest lost between this half of the season and the next then maybe AMC will get off of this breaking up seasons schtick. I read somewhere that Weiner was pretty adamantly against it but AMC didn't leave him much of a choice.
