LOTR: Theatrical Edition or Extended Edition

Which one do you prefer?

Extended for certain, although there are a few scenes I'll skip over. Really feel like there's something missing when I watch Fellowship without Concerning Hobbits, The Two Towers without the Boromir/Faramir scene, and in Return of the King without Saruman's death and the Mouth of Sauron. It's just much better IMO.

Extended edition just because I enjoy that world so much and want to spend more time in it.

Awesome. I keep seeing people say that the theatrical editions are better films, and that the extended editions are just for nerds. I've seen the theatrical editions, and own the extended editions. Just haven't taken the time to watch them yet.

Extended edition by a mile for LOTR, theatrical for The Hobbit. I enjoy the extended edition for LOTR so much that I even watched all 3 movies with the director commentary. It was awesome.

Extended- too many great scenes that the audience missed.
My favorite.. Fangorn at Helm's Deep.

The extended edition is much better.
It's hard to belive that the Galadriel scenes were cut from the original film.

Have you guys read the novel? I wonder if people who hadn't would appreciate it as much.

Read the books. They're amazing

Of everything that's cut from the books, I feel like the extended versions really didn't delve too much into that.
Of things I think of it hat weren't in the movies, I think of Tom Bombadill which is completely unfilmable and some of the world building scenes. The books had a greater sense that the world was changing and there's a sense that the beauty in the world was ending in a sense.
Book Spoilers:
Tom Bombadill is a godlike figure who the hobbits run into early on in their journey right after they leave the shire. He's super mysterious but it's implied he's all powerful. But (and this is a theme throughout LOtR) he really doesn't care about the conflicts of men and wizards and orcs so while he could hide the ring from Sauron, he'd be an unsafe keeper of the ring because he wouldn't remember to protect it.

If you're a big fan of LOTR, you'll enjoy the extended versions. A casual fan may find them a bit long..

Easily extended, especially the Two Towers. It's probably my least favorite theatrical cut and favorite extended cut.

The mouth of Sauron scene is a must.

Fellowship of the ring is FAR better in the extended edition. The others are also better.
As for the hobbit, the fan edited edition is really good. It cuts out all the ridiculous additions and a lot of the over the top cgi.

Is there a condensed of all three with basically no scenes with 2 or more hobbits in them?

I'm glad they left Tom Bombadil out of the movies. By doing so, they kept something special for the book readers. The illiterate masses aren't worthy of Tom.
