I’ve been wanting to read the book and/or watch the series but the book is over 900 pages and I’m in the middle of reading another book. Should I read the book or is the series a good enough adaptation? I’m sure most answers will be book first then series but I ain’t got all the time in the world

I love the adaptation, but book. No question.

I watched series first then read book. Liked both.

From what I remember series follows book very well, just omits a few details. It's been 20 years since I read book though.

Just watch the series. It’s great and you can knock it out in a few days.

Neither. Read the first two books in the series first. Dead Man’s Walk is very good and Comanche Moon May be better than Lonedome Dove.

I put the series up there with Band of Brothers as my favorite series/movie/television productions of all time, so I might be a bit biased, but I'd say check out the series first. First rate acting all around.

I did the series first and then read the book and enjoyed both.

Why not both? Why choose between greatness? Cut out some other shite you watch that sucks like late night tv or SNL.

The adaptation is great, the book is somehow better. Also Comanche Moon and Dead Man’s Walk are incredible.

The book is one of those you can not put down once you get into it.

I read the book first, many years ago before the show was made, but I recall that the show was very close to the book. You won’t miss much by just watching the show; except for seeing how the characters & events you imagined as you read the book compare to the ones on the screen.

The series is an amazing adaptation; Robert Duvall at his best, in my opinion. But given the choice, read the book. Read it years ago and I still consider it my favorite. Not just the story, but the character development is what makes it great.
You won't be sorry for having spent the time reading it.

Book. Its long but I literally couldn't put it down. One of the best books I've ever read.

I found this treasure late; only embracing last year.

The book was fantastic. Light reading, yet complex in the landscape it paints, the characters involved, and the challenges they encounter. I loved it.

I read a review on the Book Board that bemoaned "I was pissed when it was over, simply because it was over." And this is true.

After finishing reading, I watched the series.

Overall, it follow the books very closely, but I was disappointed simply because Westerns of its era do a shitty job of portraying the setting. The cast more than make-up for this and really bring the characters to life.

In short - read and watch. Enjoy it, you'll never have that first experience again.

I did both. Since the series is so great I would skip the book. You can’t read them all.
