I know the actual physical filming location was in Jersey, but I would have been certain before this thread they were meeting in the city (as far as setting) because 1 or more of them were already in the city.
I may have to stand corrected on that point.

Great series with an unsatisfying ending.
It is what it is.
Chase will give a different answer depending on how he's feeling at the time.

This. Interpret the ending how you will, but don't base your interpretation on anything Chase says. He's flip-flopped on that every which way now. Guy wakes up one day and alludes to Tony getting wacked. The next day, Tony lives forever, we just stopped following his story at that point. The third, "you don't understanding the deeper meaning of my art". The fourth, he's back to hinting that Tony was wacked again. Don't listen to Chase.

When they killed Phil Leotardo at the gas station in front of his wife, I took it to mean that the proverbial gloves were off. If Tony being shot is really what happened, it was probably due to that IMO.
I agree. I also like the theory that Patsy was in on it and may have had a deal with Butch, to let both Phil and Tony get whacked so they could end the war (since most of it was Phil and Tony's fault anyway) and those two could assume control. Patsy had motivation because he knew Tony ordered his brother's whacking.
I've grown to like and appreciate the ending, the way the whole season set up and led to it. It does kind of suck that we don't see the how the NJ crew looks after war. Is Silvio a veg the rest of his life? What happens to Paulie after he finally takes over the supposed cursed crew? Is AJ still a pussy? But that ties back into the story being told from Tony's POV and everything stops when he's whacked.

This made me angrier than not knowing what happened with Tony. Silvio was by far my favorite character and I hate not knowing what happened to him.

The best evidence for Tony being dead has to do with a conversation that was had regarding being assassinated. Something along the lines of: You will never see it coming; it will be like the lights just went out.
They even had a flashback to the conversation in or near the finale.

The visual language of the last scene supports the theory that Tony was whacked. There's a rhythm that gets established where Tony hears the door to the restaurant open and reacts, then they cut to his POV shot of the person coming inside. This happens three times.
In this interpretation, the black screen is really the final shot - the shot from the point of view of a dead guy.
I agree with the people who say it's a cop-out ending, though. There's this argument that the caliber of the ending is demonstrated by how much discussion it has inspired, but it's not like disappointment doesn't inspire discussion.

It was Bobby, he said it early in the last season. Tony flash backed to it at the end of the episode when Bobby dies.

That is why I think it was a foreshadowing of Bobby's death, not necessarily Tony's. It was proven to be false because Bobby's death was anything but quick.

I always liked the "viewer got whacked" interpretation. We definitely never saw it coming when it all went black. Tony and Bobby were foretelling our fate. Plus I know some wiseguys that wanted me dead back then.

It's also plausible to think Tony lived on because he was always lucky as shite when it came to getting whacked.
Obviously everyone's time is up at some point, but in all reality, he should have been dead long before the final season.

It has been a while since I've seen it but I'm pretty sure they were saying that were at the actual place where it was filmed, not just using it as a stand in location for a fictional place in NYC and that is why Meadow was late, since she was coming from the city.

Tony had New York's boss whacked in front of his grand kids and with his head crushed they couldn't even have an open casket. There's no way that members jacket guy wasn't sent there by NY to whack Tony.

this quote from chase always rubbed me the wrong way
David Chase has always been a prick about the ending. I think (as someone else said) he left it open in anticipation of a possible movie. That doesn't sound arty enough for him so he comes up with bullshite justifications. Still my favorite show of all time and I actually liked the ending.

I don't get how it's even a debate. That guy was there to kill him and hes either dead or fricked up (in the case there was a movie).
It was a very good ending IMO. Just like getting shot in the head, you never see it coming and its lights out.
