Is there something I'm missing with the ending? I get Meadow trying to park builds up suspense and it's kinda like a last supper meal, but why cut it off as Meadow walks in. All in all great series, but feel that they left it with a huge cliffhanger.

The story is told from Tony's perspective. The big guy who goes to the bathroom comes out and shoots Tony in the back of the head. Tony never sees it coming and neither does audience.

It's obviously left open for interpretation. I tend to think Chase is showing Tony's fate as someone who'll be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life, knowing the inevitable may always be just a moment away. Pay attention to the song Tony was listening to at the table: I believe Chase didn't pick it randomly...

Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on, and on, and on

Tony's shot in the head at the end of the series in front of his family.

It's meant to be open to interpretation, but I think the best arguments are clearly in favor of Tony being killed.

I think this guy has done some updates recently, but here is a link to a ridiculously thorough explanation.

Recently David Chase made the claim that Tony Soprano is still alive, but the context and tone in which he said that made the answer unconvincing to those of us who go along with the "Tony was assassinated" plot.

Some people are positive Tony is dead.

People forget that they were toying with the idea of a movie when the show was canceled so I believe he left it open like that in case a movie happened and if not, he could always say Tony was clearly dead.

I never watched the show, but I have seen the end of the finale, and read that super long "Tony died" blog (posted above). All I'll say is that based on that dude's logic, I believe Tony got shot. And on top of that, Chase can say whatever he wants, but if Tony isn't dead/shot at the end of the finale, then it was a simply awful way to end it and people SHOULD be pissed.

I do think it was a copout ending. I know it makes some people feel more intelligent to rave about how brilliant the ending was and how we shouldn't have everything force fed to us and be smart enough to interpret our ending. If that's the case, why not just show a pilot episode and let us create the whole series in our mind. It was lazy and my only complaint about what I consider the greatest show of all time.

I refuse to believe this because it would so lame. Him getting murdered without any context was lame enough but at least that takes balls. Plus they beat it over the head with the "you never see it coming" line

Just ending the show and saying "hey the story goes on but i am sick of doing it" is bs. That like writing a book and leaving out the last chapter

this quote from chase always rubbed me the wrong way

quote:

There was so much more to say than could have been conveyed by an image of Tony facedown in a bowl of onion rings with a bullet in his head. Or, on the other side, taking over the New York mob. The way I see it is that Tony Soprano had been peoples' alter ego. They had gleefully watched him rob, kill, pillage, lie, and cheat. They had cheered him on. And then, all of a sudden, they wanted to see him punished for all that. They wanted "justice." They wanted to see his brains splattered on the wall. I thought that was disgusting, frankly. [...] The pathetic thing—to me—was how much they wanted his blood, after cheering him on for eight years.

as tony said himself "only two ways out dead or in jail" people tend to have an expectation of mafia arc. He just wanted to be edgy.

It was a great ending. I was pissed when it happened but over the years have come to appreciate its brilliance. It is open to interpretation but either way you interpret it is not good for Tony.

Obviously, in one interpretation he is dead and the last thing he saw is his daughter witnessing his brains getting blasted all over the floor.

The other interpretation is that he will spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder and will eventually get whacked. What kind of life is that?

Either way, Tony is not living happily ever after.

I don't think he could ever decide if he wanted Tony to be dead or not, and still hasn't decided.

He used a line taken straight from goodfellas as the out so he doesn't ever really have to say.

I love the show and will put an episode casually on ever so often. The ending was always kind of lame.

The only hole in him being dead is families are generally respected in the mob.

Hard for me to see them whacking him in front of his entire family, at dinner.

But then again, I'm no wise guy.

you have to kind of assume it is someone that went rogue because Tony had won the war.

Every time the bell rings, he looks up and you experience Tony's POV for a few moments - it definitely generated a sense of paranoia - and what it feels like to be Tony Soprano. Chase has backed off of it, but that last one is supposed to represent Members Only guy coming out of the bathroom and whacking Tony in front of his family.

In any event, my initial take was that it was ambiguous - that it is never going to get easy for Tony Soprano (even if you reject the obvious interpretation that was the moment of his death - and I've wavered back and forth on that) - and that he's going to be looking over his shoulder whether he lives 1 more second or 50 more years.

When they killed Phil Leotardo at the gas station in front of his wife, I took it to mean that the proverbial gloves were off. If Tony being shot is really what happened, it was probably due to that IMO.

Completely agree.

I hated it at the time but have grown to like it because it pretty leaves it open to interpretation to any viewpoint or opinion. Did he die? Was the guy just random, harmless civilian? Is the entire scene a metaphor for the rest of his life? It's pretty much open to any way you can dissect it, which makes it a good ending.

Why he was taking a chance by being in the city, instead of his own territory in Jersey belies the fact that Tony thought the war was over.

he was in his own territory in Jersey.

Its left up to you to decide what happens. I thought the show and the ending was great. It let me finish the story the way I wanted to.

He lives and he won the war. The end
