Joss Whedon quits Twitter. (Spoilers for Age of Ultron)

Joss Whedon and Twitter have broken up. The conscious uncoupling happened at some point on Monday, following the $191.3 million opening weekend of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which collected the second-highest grossing three-day debut in history. (After only the $207 million opening of Whedon’s original Avengers in 2012.)
Whedon’s departure did create a wave of speculation on Twitter that he closed his account because of “death threats.” A search of tweets directed at him over the past week definitely turned up some deep ugliness, with some of the abusive users urging him to “die” or “commit suicide” over plot points they didn’t like in Age of Ultron. Although these comments are clearly disturbing, there was no unifying complaint or groundswell of attack beyond just the random (but all-too-typical) viciousness of anonymous social media trolls.
The most abusive bullying came from viewers who objected to Black Widow’s tentative relationship with The Hulk’s Bruce Banner and another scene in which she was briefly captured by Ultron. There was also anger about how he depicted Quicksilver and a number of other plot points that “fans” of this comic book title apparently felt justified harassment. Filtered out and pasted together, as some on Twitter have done, it looks like significant vitriol – but compared to the immense volume of conversation about this film on the social media platform, it’s really background static.
Was Whedon merely retreating from Twitter after his publicity effort was finished, or was he forced off by a loose fringe of haters taunting him to block them or “commit suicide”? He hasn’t said. Maybe a little of both. As Patton Oswalt, who has skewered the hypersensitivities of the politically correct crowd before, tweeted today: “There is a ‘Tea Party’ equivalent of progressivism/liberalism. And they just chased Joss Whedon off Twitter. Good job, guys. Ugh.”

I enjoy Whedon's work immensely. But his fans have elevated him to a position where he's become a target. You can't point out a bad scene or bad line without them running to his defense. And once you get put on that pedestal, you have to watch everything that you do or you're open for attack.
His criticizing Jurassic Park just opened him up for a punch to the jaw. If you talk shite like that, you'd better make sure you dot every i and cross every t in your next film (which he didn't).

No kidding. Good God this man has generated a cult-like following.

Meh. The internet has done a lot of fantastic things in our time, but this underbelly of uber disgusting morons really puts a damper on the accomplishments.

Whedon first criticized a Jurassic World preview clip that he called "70's era sexist" for its framing of "stiff" women, before backing down and apologizing for the "bad form" statement. He had also begun to face some criticism for his portrayal of Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow in the most recent Avengers movie.

Apparently he had a lot of SJWs after him because of the way the women characters were portrayed in AoU. They went after the guy that created Buffy.

Didn't we only start Twitter for Much Ado About Nothing and Avengers?
I'm not saying that's the only reason he left, but maybe it was an easy decision because what's the point anymore?

Immediately prior to deleting his account, Whedon tweeted: "Thank you to all the people who've been so kind and funny and inspiring up in here".
'Bad form'

My point, entirely.
Even the prostitute in firefly was a badass in her own way. Whats next? Bill O'reily not conservative enough for republicans? Malcolm X not black enough for black folks?

I blame #gamergate:

In the past, Whedon has used his Twitter account to voice his support for activist Anita Sarkeesian, who has done work to highlight the misogyny and sexism in many video games.

Unfamiliar, can you explain what that is?

Woman makes shitty video game. Woman allegedly sleeps with game reviewers so shitty game gets good reviews. The internet finds out about these allegations, goes apeshit, and only the extremists opinions get noted for both sides.

I've seen/noticed it more with his fans than with other creators in his position. You mention some of his writing that didn't work and they jump in to blame the actors or directors for screwing it up.
That, and the T-Shirts:

He also said empire wasn't a complete film as a critique
Um, you make commercial diarrhea, shut up

Articles everywhere have sprung up overnight claiming that ‘gamers are dead’, or ‘gamers are killing gamers’. Chances are you’ve seen one of these articles with whatever sensationalist title they’ve used to draw you in, but why are people saying this? What does #GamerGate mean?
Well, to put it simply, the general gaming public are concerned with the quality and integrity of video game journalism. Much evidence has surfaced over the past few weeks that exposes many gaming journalists have personal ties with the people they sponsor and write about. Type in #gamergate on any social media site (Twitter and Tumblr being the most bountiful) to be flourished with a wave of evidence supporting this.
And how have the journalists over at Kotaku and Polygon and the like reacted to this? With interesting and critical analysis of their own practices and methods? No. Fact-checking all the sides of the debate before coming to a reasonable and logical conclusion? No – just pointing fingers at gamers and saying that they are to blame. With this barrage of accusations from journalists and their followers, it can be pretty difficult to find out what GamerGate is truly about.
This article should help clear things up.
It’s not about gender at all, actually. People have flooded the #GamerGate tag on Tumblr and especially Twitter, strawmanning by claiming that GamerGate is merely a group of misogynists that are unhappy with women in video games. To anyone who’s actually examined the issue, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, observations found no blatantly misogynistic tweets or Tumblr posts, what we did see were laments from gamers who are sick to death with being demonised by mainstream media sites.
The term ‘misogynist’ is often tossed around indiscriminately in today’s social media as a tool to silence someone’s opinion. Why listen to someone if they’re a sexist, right? Well, the power of the word has ironically lead to its meaninglessness, so much to the point where “misogynist” can easily translate to “someone who disagrees with me”. Always be skeptical of these sudden accusations unless proved otherwise.

Dude tried so hard to pander to the SJW crowd and now he's learning how big of a mistake that was.
