Heaven forbid someone tries to branch off from the source material.

They could always make a spinoff and make a movie about a different British spy who happens to be black.

There have been plenty of characters in literature that have changed race when adapted to film, no one ever has any issues with it until James Bond comes up.

Have any of them changed race after already being in multiple movies?

They kind of already tried to do that w/Halle Berry's Jinx character in Die Another Day but that movie was so poorly received that MGM decided to reboot the entire series.

Thanks for the honest intelligent response.

Because Daniel Craig did not sign a contract for infinite Bond films.

If you're going to have to recast Bond either way, why not go with the best actor you can find that is capable of bringing Bond to life? When you list off traits of what you think "defines" Bond, myself (and many others) feel that Elba allows you to check every box except race.

Aside from the fact that he'll probably be the same age as Daniel Craig is now when the next movie comes out? So that means you get him for one, maybe two films? Then, you have to at least retcon some things to have a character thats been white for 50 years now be black. Whether you admit it or not, thats something you're going to have to acknowledge.

Hell, I would be interested in seeing a movie about a different 007 status spy.

Haven't seen a single mention of black Felix Lieter... No one freaked the F out about that. And if you try to tell me Fleming had an idea of a black CIA agent back in the 50s, you can GTFO.

It's not that big of a deal. Elba would be absolutely badass. If Elba is "too street" than Cumberbatch is way too frickin' soft for me.

Cumberbatch would be way more odd than Elba, and even less believable. All my opinion though.

that would be a fairly large change to the character and the way he reacts though.

its pretty well established that being a spy is what got his wife killed and multiple Bonds w/different actors have referenced this.

Black Bond wouldn't bother me, them talking about James Bond as gay would probably get me to not see the movie. I'd understand though if gay guys didn't want to see current Bond with women though. Different strokes for different folks.

That one guy has been using since before he was promoted to 007. You can't have every spy using the code name James Bond. That would kind of be a tell.

Yes. James Bond is not black. Period.

Why? It's a code name for a spy. Can black people not be spies?

james Bond isn't a random "spy".

he is an actual character from books. You might try reading them.

Perry White from Superman comes to mind, Hell a character in Man of a Steel even flipped genders and nobody cared.

Also the Bond franchise is no stranger to this anyway, the character of Felix Leiter has swapped race. Since the Bond series has the loosest continuity of any film franchise, it's not entirely wild for it to happen.

Where he's Scottish. But only one Scottish actor has played 'him'. And one of the other actors who played 'him' was fricking Irish.

Do we need to go remake Shaft starring Leo DiCaprio? No we do not.

This argument actually points out an issue that black people have. Iconic black characters like Shaft have to have being black be a pivot and central characteristic of there story in order to be black.

James Bond is traditionally white, but it has nothing to do with his character. White characters can be defined by other aspects of their character. In fact, I'd be interested in seeing if Ian Flemming actually described the color of Bond's skin ever in his books.

dont care that he was black, do care that it was a horribly written newspaperman and that it was a phoned in performance.

No they didnt. While the character had the first name Jenny, she did not have the last name Olsen.

I like Elba but I wouldn't go see any Bond movie with him as 007.
