Overall I really liked interstellar. I like the fact that a lot of the movie was scientifically pretty accurate (for a movie). The special effects and the music were also great. I guess one of the only things I didn't like was how Cooper was rescued at the end after getting out of the black hole. They happen to find him just as his air was running out, just seemed a bit too convenient. Did anyone else find it strange that none of Murphy's family bothered to say anything to Cooper? I know they never met but he was still there grandfather.

He was obviously placed there by the future evolved humans that sent for him to begin with.

Regarding the family, what would you say if Abraham Lincoln walked into your grandmother's hospital room? I have to imagine Cooper is that level legend at this point. They must have grown up with the stories of this man who risked everything to try and save mankind and did so by sending messages back in time to his daughter. I think the response was appropriate. Awe struck, not familial.

I like Nolan's stuff overall. Liked Interstellar and the first Batman movie, loved the Prestige and Inception.

The second two Batman movies are crap though. The only reason the second gets any love is Heath Ledger. Aside from that, it is was a junk movie with a distractingly ugly female lead that unraveled more and more as it went on to the point that it was a boring, discombobulated mess by the end. The third picked up in Awfultown where the second left off and was just terrible throughout.

So Nolan, a director I like overall, is far from perfect. Interstellar has imperfections, and a less than satisfying end sequence, but I enjoyed the movie as a whole.

Finally watched last night. My initial expectation was to really enjoy the movie. About a 1/4 of the way in, I was prepared to call if a dud. The concept for the movie was set up terribly, but once they get into space, the movie really takes off. The "science" in the movie was pretty elementary; although I appreciated how they didn't try to explain everything. The metaphysics presented in the story are what ultimately pull the movie through.

It's a big, ambitious mess that ultimately finds its way by the end in a big way when the story, characters, metaphysics, special effects, and music all come together. I will never be disappointed in or regret a ballsy movie that risks everything to shoot for the stars (pun intended)

Best part: The final 20 minutes.

Worst part: Matt Damon's conventional character and the movie's setup (specifically, the NASA setup).

Damon is usually the worst part of a movie, but I hate him in real life and generally boycott his movies. I did not know he was in this movie until he showed up and I nearly turned it off. I was hooked though so powered through.

He is one of the more outspoken liberal pieces of human feces that pervade Hollywood, along with Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins.

But it really cratered with the whole bookcase nonsense.

Yeah, just watched it last night and was really into the movie until the black hole bit. Movie could have been great if it had gone in another direction.

Watched it again (for the third time). IMO, gets better with each viewing. Scope, ambition, score, feels, flaws - one of my favorites.

Some spoilers . . .

Well, I just watched it. It was pretty good - beautifully shot and with some pretty good acting. While I can stomach the bookcase scene, having him come back and be found floating around Saturn was just a bit too much. Then, of course, his daughter is still alive and he spends all 1 minute with her - the same daughter he cried about all this time.

There are also about 100 questions I can ask about this movie, but will not do this here. I'll look up some past threads - I'm just not sure I'm that interested.

Ambitious as hell movie.

It reminded me a bit of the tin foil hat movie with Mel Gibson and Joaquín Phoenix, Dune, and God knows what else.

Too long, plodding, poor acting, poor writing.

Very, very disappointed.

You and I just have widely diverging opinions on what constitutes poor acting or poor writing. I agree that the movie was long - but it was paced well - it did not feel it's almost 3 hour running time, but it was pretty much at my limit of endurance.

I thought it was well balanced for its ambitious scope, and I agree the movie did not hit every pitch - very few movies do - but the things it does well outweigh a few of the frayed edges.

We do, and these divergences are the spice of life. This board would be boring were all of the same opinion. I think Hathaway is a horrible actress.

It felt like five, six hours.

Plodding, but did have the odd brief flash (Mann and Cooper on the surface),

This movie also was reminiscent of the Dennis Quaid movie where he contacts himself via his ham radio,

While I think she is somewhat overrated, she held her own in this film. MM was great, Chastain was great, Foy was great, Damon has a tough time with unlikeable characters (like in The Departed), but he delivered well enough - particularly the awakening scene, Sir Michael was consistent (as he always has been) - the voice actors for the robots were excellent.

While I didn't find any performance particularly outstanding (maybe Chastain and Foy) - I found the acting par or better for a film of this scope.

I'm going to watch it again, soon, and try to be objective on Hathaway's "love" speech, but on first viewing, in the moment, I thought it was fine - the placement of it was a little awkward and forced, but that's on Nolan - but, overall, I didn't see the glaring flaws that many others (you're not alone) did.

Yeah, much was forced and awkward.

I agree

Anyway, I would at first glance say my expectations were possibly too high or even out of whack, but people whose taste differs tremendously from mine, were really, really taken aback with this movie, as well.

Just trying to get gauge of what your opinion is of a superior movie...what sci fi movie do you find outstanding?

Maybe therein lies the problem, I´m not a big fan of the genre.

I think A Clockwork Orange a superior movie/outstanding sci-fi movie.

I think you dont necessarily have to be a huge fan of scifi to enjoy the movie, but it helps. I was raised with them, and I thoroughly enjoyed this film, especially the second viewing. Could it have been made better? Absolutely. Viewing the huge thread about interstellar, and this one, there are tons of different opinions on what it should have been, but to me, Nolan illustrated it perfectly. The score was outstanding. The acting in a general sense, with what they were given, was good. Was it a masterpiece? No. But he barely missed.

Like I said, from posts and the odd review blurb, I understood Interstellar to be up there for movie of the year type stuff, potentially transcendental of Close Encounters of The Third Kind calibre.

Again, my expectations may have seriously skewed my experience.

Reflecting a bit, I could see where this may be a bit more enjoyable the second time around. A bit.
