Binge watched over a 3 week period last year. Best series I have watched.

I'd rank the seasons:
43125

The Wire is an all-time great, definitely on the GoaT tier of TV.

Personally I think The Sopranos and The Shield were (for varying reasons on all three) SLIGHTLY better but it's hair-close.

I've never been able to finish it. It's extremely well done and all the actors are great, but at the end of the day I never make it through... Always get stuck at end of season 2 or start of season 3. I'll try again when my kids are older and I have more time.

It starts at a glacial pace. I would give it a season if you can.

Same here. Nothing special but its ok (I finished season 1 and snailing through 2). Never got my "must binge" attention.

I watched episode 1. Couldn't get into it, but it might have been the state of my mind at the time. I'll definitely give it another shot someday.

Great show that you don't realize it's greatness until the end of the seasons

In all honesty, the series really works a lot better as a binge, rather than something you watch once a week. The episodes generally don't end with big twists or cliffhangers, and I would even argue there are stretches where it's downright boring.

The desire to binge the show comes once you get invested in the characters and their stories, rather than explosive moments. While that's part of what makes the show great, it does take a bit longer to get into and definitely hurt the shows ratings during the original run.

I was about to say this. There were admittedly not many episodes where I found myself thinking I had just watched an amazing hour of television. However, by the end of each season, I definitely realized how much I enjoyed it.

I think it's because of how different each season is, as soon as you get into the Rhythm, it's the ends of the season, and all this newness hits again and you have a natural resistance to the change, but in the end you realize how awesome the change was.

My season ranking (still have a few season 5 episodes left so I won't rank it) so far is 3,1,2,4

And it's tough because 4 is an awesome season, but coming in last because McNulty is barely there (although I was sad to see him slip back to old patterns in season 5 even tho it meant him being more involved)

exactly where I am. The wife hates it so I keep trying to finish the episodes late at night and keep falling asleep.

I'm trying very hard but my mind keeps wandering and I have to keep rewinding dialog.

Maybe it's not for me. Not real invested with any of the characters so far.

It was entertaining to me, but other shows such as The Soparanos and Breaking Bad were more entertaining. The Wire is more important to society than both of them though. It shows how major American cities such as Baltimore, New Orleans, and Detroit become filled with corruption and poverty. Brilliant show.

how long did it take you to start enjoying it?

if i'm not enjoying it by ep. 6, should i assume its not worth continuing?

I honestly don't remember. I want to say not until later in the first season. It takes them a while to set the scene.

I would tough the first season out. If you don't like it after that, then you've given it a fair shake.
