Here's why you can't see Interstellar in IMAX in Louisiana (UPDATE: You can!)

I thought I'd spread this for my fellow cinema snobs who were wondering why the only two true IMAX screens in the state of Louisiana didn't get Interstellar (nor any Hollywood features).

UPDATE: The Entergy IMAX will now be getting Interstellar! Here are the details.

it all makes sense... they did have the hobbit and dark knight rises there but after about a month or two of it being in regular theaters.

quote:I actually drove from Memphis to Nashville to see Interstellar in 70 mm IMAX. There are only thirty-seven 70 mm IMAX theaters in the US (unless I'm mistaken), and about 10 of those are in California. Definitely something to not take for granted.

Well, crap, I thought I saw Gravity in IMAX here in Baton Rouge. That's how it was advertised. It just looked like the screen was full size instead of having the curtains covering part of it. So this is not surprising but how do they get away with lying about it?

not the same response I got when emailed them, Im sure they got alot of questions

A real IMAX screen is gigantic. The one at the AMC is only slightly larger than a normal screen.

One at smnithsonian is much bigger

So what are the ones in baton rouge? We are driving up tomorrow to go see the hobbit. Is it worth it? or just see it in regular theater? I remember seeing imax out of state a while back and it was huge... how lame is this going to be?

Nothing in Baton Rouge is real IMAX, but then, I don't think any of The Hobbit was filmed with actual IMAX cameras, so I don't think you're necessarily seeing an inferior product.
It's all very confusing, and deliberately so. In general, "IMAX Digital" is a synonym for LieMAX. Which is not to say that seeing a movie in that format isn't better than seeing it in a regular theater, especially depending on whether the movie was targeting that spec. As far as I know you're seeing The Hobbit in the best way available. The benefit of that movie being shown on a real IMAX screen (which it isn't in Louisiana, though was last year) is simply that it's a bigger screen, though of course the film wouldn't be taking up anywhere near all of it because IMAX dimensions are much more vertically inclined.
Movies getting shot on true IMAX are rare, and Nolan's films have been the most notable examples. And even then, it's too costly/impractical to shoot the whole movie in IMAX, so it tends to be a select amount, though Nolan's been upping the ante. (He shot 20-30 minutes of The Dark Knight in IMAX, but over an hour of The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar in it.)
Other examples of movies partially shot in real IMAX were the latest Mission Impossible, the latest Star Trek, and the latest Hunger Games.
