The novel Hannibal was a mail in job by harris. SOTL is possible the best novel I have ever read and was pretty easy to transfer that to film. The source material for Hannibal was crap...cartoonish indulgent crap.

It was cartoonish and indulgent and probably bad, but I don't know about a mail-in job. At any rate, it posed a huge problem for a film adaptation and I think they did the best they possibly could with it.

Amusingly, at the time the book was released, everyone was sure the more depraved content could not make it to the screen, and next thing you know Ray Liotta is being served his brain in a nice wide shot. The movie cut out a lot of subplots, but I think for time and not content.

Unless you count the silly ending where they run off together, but you know what? I could easily see the TV show ending like that (but with Will standing in for Clarice).

Well, Netflix and Amazon both passed on picking up Hannibal. I guess it's just too expensive and they don't feel they'll get enough new subscibers from the show to justify it. Really sucks but hopefully someone picks it up.

Damn, I thought Amazon would have picked it up.

Seems like Amazon's hang-up was the fact that Bryan Fuller wouldn't be able to begin work on a new season for a full year due to his "American Gods" commitment. And everyone else is naturally balking because Amazon has exclusive streaming rights in the U.S. through 2017.

Although there's still an outside chance from some other company, probably time to start coming to terms with the idea that Hannibal's run as a regular series is kaput. I'm expecting Fuller to try to finance a film or potentially a "Sherlock" style irregular miniseries down the line though.

At least this season is supposed to close out its arcs.

Hannibal moved to Saturday night starting this week.

Beginning this week, Dateline Thursday Mysteries will air from 9-11 PM on Thursdays. On Saturday, Aquarius will air from 9-10 and Hannibal from 10-11 PM.

As I don't have cable I buy these shows off Amazon, and I'm secretly hoping the new episode still shows up in my account early Friday morning as it always does.

Apparently Canada will continue to air the show on Thursdays. This is about the ratings being so bad that NBC has received pressure from its affiliates. The solution is to move the show to Saturday where there are no ratings expectations and replace the Aquarius-Hannibal slot with Dateline. It says a lot about how few people are watching these shows that Dateline will reliably perform better in the demo. Additionally, NBC had this scheme scheduled for August, but is initiating the move early because of the aforementioned pressure.

It's no skin off the already-cancelled Hannibal's nose (and we should I guess be thankful they're broadcasting the rest of the season at all), but it's an interesting situation for Aquarius, which got renewed. Some are speculating that Aquarius will be online-only next year, or that NBC may even reverse their renewal (uncommon, but has happened).

Would be awesome if the remaining episodes have huge ratings.

Don't think they are going to get big ratings on Saturday at 10pm.

Ratings don't matter for Hannibal. It's cancelled.

So good news for any fellow cable cutters who buy this on Amazon. The new episode was made available early this morning on Amazon VOD like it always is. Can't guarantee they won't eventually adjust this for future episodes, but enjoy for now.

I wasn't digging this season at first but man the last couple episodes have been awesome. The red dragon arch should be insane. It is truly a shame this is getting cancelled with how good it is, can only hope it goes a similar route as Community did and that the audience rallies the show.

This last episode was completely insane and could have functioned as a series finale. It was Michael Pitt's loss when he decided not to sign on for Season 3. Joe Anderson was clearly having a ball as Mason Verger in what is definitely the character's showcase episode. "Well, no pajama party for you, Mr. Graham." And of course:

Bring on "Red Dragon," the storyline this entire show has been leading up to. Really looking forward to the return of Chilton and Freddie Lounds, and further mind games from Lecter to torment Will with.
