S3E5: Contorno
quote:
The offer of riches from Mason Verger threatens to put Inspector Pazzi off his quest for redemption; Will and Chiyoh travel to Florence in search of Hannibal; Alana Bloom worries for everyone's safety.

This season's getting really good. Bryan Fuller says episode 7 will end the "Italian chapter," then they essentially do a jump into Red Dragon. So despite how early we are in this season we're getting into climax mode here.
So do you guys think Bloom is conning Verger, or does she genuinely want to help him snatch Lecter? I'd prefer if it was the latter and she ends up turning against Verger when Will is inevitably put in danger. (After all Graham is one of Mason's enemies.)

If it's canceled, that's bs. Just goes to show how impatient American TV viewers are. I'll admit that the droplets or waves of blood/wine imagery were getting a bit tiresome, I love the show.
Yes, it can be challenging, even frustrating at times. The story is fascinating and I enjoy the attention that it requires. Do I completely understand everything that's going on? No. That's part of the appeal, though. Just trying to figure out how things will come together.

I want to touch Gillian Anderson.

Welp....anyone want to comment on that full retard ending? That was so freaking utterly unbelievable in any conceivable universe.
I can see why the show is getting canceled.

Enjoyed tonight's episode. The only negative was the last interaction between Will & Chiyo. I found that a bit corny.

There's no question it's taken away from the show. I like Hannibal and there have been times when I wanted it to stop. We get it, your, mom bought you a cool camera but nothing is addded to the show by allowing us to see a human liver sizzle in super slo-mo.
As manhunts go this may well be one of the worse in history

Fun stuff. I like that we finally got a bit of legit mustache-twirling from Hannibal this episode.
Surprised/delighted that Verger's "Spitters are quitters" line snuck past the NBC goalies.

i love this show, but the move completely away from the FBI, which sounded great in theory, has turned into a total disaster.

I couldn't believe that either

“Well, you got to hand it to the man. He’s got the most marvelous taste… He likes music, he likes wine, he likes food, and he likes you. How do you taste, Dr. Bloom? Sweet I bet. I’m sure you got a taste of him too. Mmm… Spitters are quitters, and you don’t strike me as a quitter.” -Mason Verger
Although the innuendo is obvious, there isn't an overt sexual connotation associated with the quote. A sizeable portion of the show is dedicated to cannibalism.

Nonsense, and anyway we can expect the FBI to return starting in Ep. 8.

Yes, there is.
While the ideal scenario is that there would never have been a recast, I have to say the new guy playing Verger is a hoot. He's definitely honoring the Gary Oldman version more. There can be no doubt, considering the amount of times they've established that pet eel, that his demise will be more like the book, however.

I'm really hoping to hear the line, "When the fox hears the rabbit scream, he comes a running..but not to help."
Posted on 7/4/15 at 12:12 pm to OneFifty
They actually used that line in the finale of Season 2, only Hannibal said it. They've co-opted a lot of lines from the books/movies like that.
I was disappointed they altered the bit where Hannibal threatens to eat Pazzi's wife. Guess they had to lose it because those two characters never meet in this version.

Forgot about that..but at least we got Verger's "Nobody beats the Rez!"
Posted on 7/4/15 at 1:33 pm to OneFifty
I hope we get:
"I guess you wish now that you fed the rest of me to the dogs."
"No Mason. No I much prefer you the way you are."
"... Dinner at eight?"

Funny, noone I know liked the 'Hannibal' movie. I loved it.

Ridley Scott's "Hannibal" is fun to talk about because it's such a weird movie. I think it's top-tier schlock that only suffers from being a sequel to "Silence of the Lambs," which occupies a whole different genre, really. So the reception that movie got is not too surprising, but it may not be entirely fair.
I believe there are some interviews with Thomas Harris where it's basically insinuated that he wrote the novel as an F-You to the inevitability of the Hollywood sequel by just making it lurid and insane. To turn that into a screenplay that was even remotely coherent took two prestigious screenwriters (David Mamet, Steven Zaillian).
It was crazy to follow-up an Oscar winning psychological thriller with a lavish, deranged slasher flick, but who doesn't love a lavish, deranged slasher flick? It's a unique movie because the money people knew it would be a success based on franchise name alone, so they just went ahead and used that bonkers book as their basis anyway. There's something awesome about the fact that $80 million was thrown at a movie where Anthony Hopkins feeds a dude his own brain while belting out Freddy Krueger one liners and getting fat off the cheap scenery.
So anyway, I can't help but love the movie, because it feels like the film-makers got away with something. And for all the zaniness, it's competently directed and definitely no hack job. I used to consider it a guilty pleasure, but eventually I decided it doesn't need a qualifier. It's basically trashy pulp with great production values and better-than-necessary cast. For what it's worth, Fuller digs it too, and you can see the influences in the TV show (even prior to adapting its storyline this season).
The less said about Red Dragon (stick with Manhunter) and Hannibal Rising, the better.
