I think this has been the plan all along. From a business perspective, it makes the most sense.

I'm not getting my hopes up too high at this point. I hope he proves me wrong, but until I see something much more substantial, I'm not going to put much thought into that hope.

It's been a long time, but he hasn't been forced to catch up to the show until now, and 5 years is right about his usual turnaround time.
I've said before, a lot of people read books like this just to see what happens next in the plot. If the show substantially passes the books, many will just skip the next one. It would still sell very well, but not quite as well as it would have otherwise.

Everyone is still aware there is a 7th book after this one right?
Everytime I think of that it makes me want to cry a little.

Oh, I agree with you 100%. It makes absolutely no sense as to why GRRM wouldn't try and release WoW before the upcoming season, from both a financial and creative standpoint.
But based on his past apparent lack of urgency with kicking out books, I just have a hard time believing that he actually gives a crap at this point.

I do think (if he doesn't croak first) that the 7th book will come out much more quickly than the 6th. The problem is after ASOS is he picked up way too many characters and plotlines. In the beginning, all but one of the central characters are in a single location, and it made it much easier to write. Once he starts picking up tons of random people that we didn't really have a clue about, the plot turned sloppy.
On the plus though, he's going to have to kill off a ton of these characters, and I think all the characters will start converging for the Final Battle with the Others. There will be a central focus in ADOS, which WOW almost certainly won't have. For that reason, I think it will be an easier write for Martin.

Nope. The publisher has already confirmed that it is not scheduled for 2015. Best hope is that we might get Winds in the first quarter of 2016. My guess is that it comes out right in the middle of GOT.

Yeah but I think this one has a bigger sense of urgency. In all likelihood the truth about John's parents will come out in this one and the seventh will be the fallout afterward. I suspect dany will at least try and do something in Westeros this book and the seventh will be the result of her success or failure. And we're supposed to be learning more about the others in this one too. The sixth will probably be the climax and the seventh will mostly be resolution. He needs the climax to happen in the books first for his own pride, the resolution seems less important.
Or not, whatever.

i think the wording means everything here.... Jon "Snow" is dead. He won't be a bastard in Season Six. He will now be either Jon Stark or Jon Targaryen.

For all of GRRM's anti-hero and anti-romanticism, Jon Snow is one of the oldest cliches in fantasy - the down and out, underdog hero who turns out to be a real prince.

Is that dothraki smoking a cigarette?

You would think a dude in that good of shape wouldn't be a smoker. Disappointing.

It is. Khal Drago means something else now.
