Another piece of advice for the OP (if he's still in here, which I almost hope he isn't) is to use subtitles when watching the show. Not only does it help understand what the frick they're saying at times, but it also shows a lot of names and places, and seeing them in writing really helps you understand and follow things a lot more clearly. I've found it really helpful, and now I don't watch the show without them.
Even after reading the books and knowing the names or people and places I find this very useful. Especially because I've already forgotten half of what happens in the earlier books.

good grief ... the show isn't that hard to follow ...

I will only post that, "I envy the OP".
I wish I could go back and read the books/view the show for the first time. Enjoy the ride.
FYI, Season 1 followed Book one very closely, almost verbatim.

Ok badass. For people like myself who have never read one page of the books, you're kidding yourself if you can't admit that the early going can be a bit tricky considering you've got about 50 weird arse names being thrown at you nonstop.

Ok. Made it through Season 2 - want to start the next season ASAP.
Anyway, this show is amazing so far - can't believe I waited so long to watch. I like the location shots, so much better than green screen movie-making (um, Peter Jackson). It has that grimy feel - as when the characters walk a path, it is as if the dirt, mud, blood, and shite is under my feet as well. The effects are also top notch, when a body gets gutted, I feel disgust. And, the babes are hot - I've yet to see a truly unattractive naked woman - the redhead (a witch?) who delivered whatever she delivered is freakin' hot, heck even the chick from Harry Potter looks pretty good.
There is so much going on in this series, and none of it boring. The game is on it appears. Stannis is being seduced by the witch, who wants something from him if he is King. Theon is not very bright, and I feel his days are numbered. The dragon mother is growing in confidence, as well as the dragons' power. Cersie Lannister and Catelyn Stark truly love their children and will do anything for them. The Starks are a fairly faithful lot - even Jon Snow - who I suspect will play an even larger role as the series continues (and who is his mother?). And, the zombies and ice giant creatures coming from beyond The Wall look scary as well.
Finally . . . what a douchey little shite head Joffrey is.

Hurry up and finish catching up before some a-hole on here inevitably spoils something for you.

Good advice. One poster did and edited. I don't understand that mentality.

GRRM actually sent actor Jack Gleeson a letter commending him for his acting and making "everyone hate him". Funny to think he was Commissioner Gordon's kid in the The Dark Knight.

The show has done a really good job of making otherwise boring parts of certain characters storylines entertaining.

I just want to know how blown your mind was when these two things went down:

Yeah, I followed that suggestion from someone here (Blugrass Belle maybe) and used closed captioning for Season 3 on and it made a huge difference in keeping up with who's who and figuring out where the story is going.

by the end of season 2 Bronn was my favorite character. The way he squared up to the hound in that tavern was pure badassery.

S2 is still my favorite because of Tyrion as HotK.

I loved his arc in season 2 though. I mean, I hated that Theon screwed over the Starks and attacked Winterfell, but it was all really well done with Theon's family drama, and Alfie Allen acted the hell out of his role that season. His speech in the last episode of S2 was epic, only to be betrayed and clubbed over the head But that whole storyline is one of my favorite season long character arcs of the entire show, and helped make season 2.

I've been using it through the first two seasons. We have a hard of hearing person in our home and I think you have to stop the show and go to settings (on my Apple TV) to change it. I was too lazy to do it, but it helped me to not miss anything. I feel pretty well informed at this point.

That was pretty f'ed up.

Anything with the England accent gives me trouble. I also use the subtitles which helps a lot. Additionally, I've taken to using headphones which really helped since I'm slowly losing some hearing ability.

I know a chick who's read all the books and she told me right after the first few episodes, "Don't fall in love with ANY character"
