Good list except for Life is Beautiful. Thought it was, in a way, insulting. The Holocaust can be fun!!! Seriously, though, my main complaint is that it is maudlin. And Roberto Benigni annoys the crap out of me and he robbed Nick Nolte of the Oscar that year.

Bus 174 is a very interesting Brazilian film dramatization about a bus hijacking in Rio de Janeiro. To me, it was amazing how the Brazilian police, SWAT, and media handled the whole situation.

I just watched this yesterday, I think Enrique recommended it to me last year. Pretty powerful stuff.

I won't post the trailer for this great movie I recently saw, and I won't offer plot details. The less you know about the film, the more you will enjoy it. For Netflix subscribers, you can watch it online:

Los Cronocrímenes (TimeCrimes)

Ebert gives it 4 out 5 stars. If you thought indie flicks like Primer were fairly unpredictable, I'd say that this one has it beat as the film progresses.

Only one I've seen that you listed is "The Orphanage". I saw it like a year ago I think. Was pretty good

Saw Vengeance Is Mine a couple of days ago. Very brutal and the sex scenes are all tense. Serial killer movie that doesn't try and explain why.

I loved Run Lola Run. Another great film is Dead-On (original title is Gegen Die Wand). The film is pretty much half in German and half in Turkish. It won a lot of awards at the Berlin Film Festival, and the director, Fatih Akin, has gone on to a lot of success on the European independent film circuit since then.

Has anyone else seen it?

I have a regular DVD player, most of the movies that I purchase or watch will function in it.

I'm a fluent Spanish speaker, so I'll watch many of the Latin-American films with the subtitles off. But since many of them have words or phrases specific to the country it was filmed in, I still need them. Secuestro Express is a great example, even Venezuelans I know need the subtitles.

Cinema Paradiso is excellent if you have never seen it. It won the Oscar for best foreign film.

I saw it when I was young, good movie.

Another good older flick is Il Postino.

Great list. I really can't add too many more "classics" to it, so I'll mention some that are just fun, with a few exceptions.

Hara Kari - Japanese great samurai film

The Killer - Hong Kong - John Woo and Yun-Fat Chow, can't beat these two together.

A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2 - see above.

Hard Boiled - Hong Kong. Also JW and Y-FC, but to me the epitome of early 90's action films the world over.

A Tale of Two Sisters - Korean - Remake just came out on DVD, horror.

Evil - Swedish - Boy's prep school before WW2. Good movie.

Nightwatch and Daywatch - Russian. First two parts of trilogy that is just weird. I liked them, not all will however. Has to do with supernatural beings.

City of Violence - Korean - Revenge flick.

Most of these are not the typical "artsy dramatic" movies mentioned so far, just some good foreign films to pass the time. All of them I've enjoyed.

Another recommendation for those of you who enjoyed Brazilian movies such as City of God and Carandiru.

quote:

Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) is a semi-fictional account of the BOPE, the Special Police Operations Battalion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police. It is the second feature film and first fiction film of director José Padilha, who had previously directed the acclaimed film Bus 174. The script was written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Bráulio Mantovani (screenwriter for City of God), based on the book Elite da Tropa by sociologist Luiz Eduardo Soares and two former BOPE captains, André Batista and Rodrigo Pimentel.

Picture City of God, told through the eyes of BOPE (the hardcore guys that do the work regular Brazilian police can't handle).
