On the advice of this thread, I watched Timecrimes last night and I really enjoyed it.

SPOILERS

There were two points where the main character broke my suspension of disbelief. He made a very quick transition from not caring about the "rules" when he first took the car and left, to kidnapping the girl. Very quick character change there. Also, taking a single glance at his "dead" wife and then running off - the lack of emotion and concern there jolted me.

Otherwise, the film was really, really excellent.

You guys had some great recommendations, in the past week I've watched Timecrimes, Bus 174, Tropa de Elite, Old Boy and Amores Perros. All of them were excellent and have helped pass the time till football season. I've got Lilja 4 Ever to watch tomorrow

I like Crimson Rivers. Beautifully filmed.

Yeah, Ichi ... it's a love-hate movie for me. Though the older I get, the less interesting depravity is to me. But you've got to give Miiki one thing, he let's his freak flag fly about as high as a non-porn filmmaker can fly.

Tai Guk Gi (Brotherhood of War) is a really good Korean war movie. The battle scenes are fantastic even though the brotherhood stuff is korean-movie hyper dramatic.

Let The Right One In trailer

Good Swedish vampire movie. Looks like it's hardly been mentioned on here, but the board for it at IMDB has got new posts every hour. Apparently there's a good bit of insight that people get from the book, also seems as though there's going to be an American remake.

It was one of the best movies I saw last year. As much about lonliness as anything.

an American remake.

The director of Cloverfield wants to take it on. I read (on Chud iirc) that they are going to keep the main characters the same age rather than Twilight it up, thank God.

Why don't people just stop being retarded and go see the Swedish version? Can they not read? No need for a remake that will probably suck arse anyway.

The same reason McDonald's sold a billion burger. The same reason chain restaurants are so popular. People want the familiar and safe.

frick 'em.

For those of you who like Brazilian films, have a new recommendation. Central do Brasil (Central Station), received Academy Award nominations in 1998 for Best Actress and Best Foreign Language Film. Great film score as well.

Brazilian movies like Central Station and House of Sand are definitely on the lighter side of things. If you enjoyed Carandiru, by all means add Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) to your list of future rentals, two of Carandiru's major characters are in it (Dagger and Zico).

frickin right that looks badass. You are a great movie recommender
The thing I'm liking about these Brazilian movies is the true stories they are influenced from and the character development.
Out of City of God, Carandiru, and Elite Squad, what would you rank them compared to each other?

Memory of a Killer (Russian, I believe)
Intacto was already mentioned...
The Devil's Backbone (Spanish)
Time Out (French)

I got bored with it early and stopped watching. Critics and plenty of people seemed to like it, it just wasn't my thing.
