I just watched this yesterday, I think Enrique recommended it to me last year. Pretty powerful stuff

I must have missed this post, but I'm glad you enjoyed it. It really is amazing at how this type of situation was handeled in a place like Brazil, and then trying to imagine how totally different it would be if it had occured in the U.S.

Another recommendation: Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad)

Finally, someone else on this board has seen it. I absolutely loved this film. Very intense and superb acting (which I have come to expect from most of these Brazilian films). For lack of a better term, it's just a badass movie.

I saw Elite Squad a few weeks ago. I liked the ending. The main actor was one of the inmates in the prison movie Carandiru. Saw that too and it was good.

Lilja 4 Ever is a good but very depressing foreign film about a young girl in Russia or the Ukraine I think. One of the more depressing movies out there.

I was surprised that I hadn't heard anyone else mention it, Netflix recommended it to me based on past reviews (yet another reason why I love Netflix).

I could tell it was him right away, but it took me a second to realize that the corrupt Captain was Dagger in Carandiru (bald guy that the other cons were afraid of).

The Elite Squad hazing was great.

I've mentioned it before, but Manda Bala is a terrific documentary on class warfare and corruption in Brazil.

It's actually really interesting how they work in the significance of the frogs as it relates to corruption in Brazil. It's pretty awesome how the random people interviewed all become connected with respect to what's occurring in Sao Paolo.

Here's a couple of French films I really liked:

Diva - Opera singer, a couple of mobsters , a mix up of tapes, danger, cool shots of Paris

La Pianiste - a sado-masochistic piano teacher played by Isabelle Huppert (very hot for a middle aged woman); disturbing but well worth watching

NOTE TO ALL: There is a French film festival at the Prytania Theater Friday through Sunday (July 10 -13). There are some very good new films scheduled (that hottie Ludvine Sagnier from Swimming Pool is in one on Saturday) plus a classic or two. You should check it out if you're in New Orleans.

Irreversible is a French flick that is good, although it will stain your mind.

I also agree with Old Boy, Nightwatch and Daywatch, and Brotherhood of the Wolf.

There's a pretty interesting mystery movie called Crimson Rivers that I also liked.

I didn't see if anyone mentioned Ichi the Killer. Many people liked it, although I think I must have missed something because I just found it outright weird. I haven't seen that much cum in some porn movies, FWIW.

The first movie in years that I cut off after about 15 minutes. I've seen all the Faces of Death videos, so it's not about it being hardcore, I just didn't like what I had seen so far.

Come and See (Russian...and probably the most psychologically brutal war movie ever made, no joke)

took a look through this thread yesterday. i didn't believe you; so, i watched it yesterday. HOLY frick. i thought that i had seen everything a war movie could throw at me (das boot was the first R rated movie my parents let me see for christ's sake). this was by far the most emotionally draining experience i have ever had through a movie.

SPOILER

Did you notice after the end of the movie during the credits where the kids are milling about in front of the school, that Majid's son walks up to the main character's son and has a conversation with him? Most people I know that have seen the movie never catch that part, and it puts an entirely different spin on the film.

Absolutely. A friend and I discussed it the entire next day.

Abre Los Ojos and Amelie are two that I purchased after seeing. I just recently (within the past year) got into foreign films. Looks like I'll have to get netflix now

IMO, Abre Los Ojos > Vanilla Sky

I love that Cruz plays the different woman in each movie.

Im a huge Vanilla SKy fan. I rented abre los ojos, and turned it off 5 minutes in. It seemed exactly like Vanilla Sky, in terms of the look, etc, which is fine, but I cant stand the Spaniard accent.
