Disney Plus lost 2.4 million subscribers in the three months ended Dec. 31, Disney said Wednesday, as the subscriber base of its flagship streaming service fell for the first time since the company launched it in 2019.

Disney's deepest streaming-subscriber losses were at its Disney Plus Hotstar service, which is an Indian offering priced way lower than the company's streaming services elsewhere. There, its member base dropped by 3.8 million accounts.

And Disney Plus also lost 200,000 subscribers in the US and Canada. But growth internationally elsewhere offset some of the declines. Overall, Disney Plus has 161.8 million subscribers as of the end of December.

By comparison, Netflix, the biggest subscription streaming service of its kind, has amassed more than 230 million global subscribers in the decade-plus since it started streaming. But Netflix recorded its deepest subscriber losses in a decade during the first half of last year, a sign that the competition for streaming customers was stretched to a breaking point.

That's like 1.4% of its subscribers.

Yeah that seems like a drop in the bucket and could have any number of explanations. But if it continues then I’m sure they’ll adjust and address it.

Great business model, huh?

Lose (not gain) millions of subscribers and fire 1000's of employees.

More relevant is the loyal park goers they are constantly alienating with their terrible decisions at Disney world over the past several years.

This will only gain steam for Peltz' hostile takeover.

He is basically the only hope the company has at this point as they attamept to sell off their IPs.

Regardless of your thoughts on Disney, the huge majority of the drop is due to cricket streaming rights in India sooooo….

Do you really expect OP to do any kind of actual research into the things he mindlessly babbles about?

The free parking is good, but otherwise the majority of the gripes remain. For example: Park hopping is very very limited. Genie remains. Splash mountain is gone.

D+ had a 3 year prepaid subscription plan which ended around that time. My guess is a lot of people who prepaid decided they didn’t need another year of it.

Yet again, another dumbass ignores reality to present an idea that fits their narrative. All the streaming services are struggling. Consumers have too many options to choose from now

SHE-HULK didn't pull 'em in?

People hop around now - a month here, a month there. Nobody wants to just stick with the same service month after month as it adds up to cable-level costs.

You mean the multiple links of actual news stories I posted? Where actual reporters have compiled numbers of millions of subscribers and 1000’s of jobs lost?

Yikes!

That MSN article was poorly worded, so Google gave me an alternative in 2 minutes that laid out the picture a little more clearly

quote:

So why the Disney+ drop? Iger attributed it wholly to losses suffered by Disney+ Hotstar, which is the Southeast Asian/Indian version of the streaming service. Last year, it suffered a massive setback when it lost streaming rights to Indian Premier League, the hugely popular cricket league in India. After that setback, Disney had lowered growth projections for the Disney+ Hotstar service and prepped investors for a decline, though it was a bit more than the company thought.

quote:

Subscriptions were up by 200,000 in the U.S. and Canada, plus other Disney-owned streamers (Hulu and ESPN+) were up by 800,000 and 600,000, respectively.

quote:

Disney stock rose in after-hours trading, buoyed by the news that the company had beaten earnings projections.

TLDR version: Disney+ is down a net 2.4 million subscribers. However, they lost almost 4 million in India alone due to Cricket, so outside of that they actually gained 1.5 million worldwide, including 200K in the US and Canada

Yet they still be market estimates and the stock is up $10 a share after hours and 30% higher since when Iger took over.

Iger, the one who set up Disney to fail, then noped out riiiight before the global pandemic , named his successor / patsy, only to come back to save the day of his own making, says it’s all good?
