her ruthlessness is a product of
1. her environment - she's been caged like an animal and mistreated
2. survival instinct - the only way she can be free is for everyone to die...including caleb. that's probably the only part I saw coming, but again they gave me doubt by doing the scene of caleb watching her "dress"

I stumbled upon it before...
But it is really this dynamic:
1 caleb is the rat in a maze
2 nathan is the scientist studying the rat
3 ava is nature (and all it programs in us -- e.g. self-preservation)
This film is man vs man, man vs technology, man vs nature

This is what it all boils down to IMO. Nothing more. No emotion.

so uh, anybody else feel creepy during the scene? I know the actress is "of age" but she looked 13 during that scene...

regardless of her emotional disposition, he had to die for her to live. Granted, I would rather just put a bullet in his head than to leave him trapped in the dark to starve
my only thing, and it is a tiny nit pick, you think Nathan, who is all about security, would have a firearm.
why doesn't he have a gun?

I cant remember the room or the lock down condition she left him in. Would it be impossible for him to escape? I think that was implied but I dont remember.

Big plothole left at the end. . .
He was left in the room with access to control the compound (and be able to reprogram the locks again)
But when he sits down at the PC, the power goes out. (never explained how, since Ava was already gone) But regardless of how the power went out, he had still already reprogrammed the system to open all the doors in the event of the outage, thereby giving him the means to escape.
Of course, when you consider it further, maybe he could get out at that point. But if he can get out, where is he to go? He's in the middle of nowhere and it's not like another helicopter will be dropping by anytime soon. . .
Good movie; saw it last night on Kodi

Its been a few weeks since I saw it but I thought Caleb's plan was to lock Nathan in and that program is what initiated to power down and lock Caleb in. I thought he was in the control room too so he should be able to reprogram the locks and get out of the room. After that he could call or email for help.
Its all just silly speculation after all since I think what is meant to be conveyed is Ava does not give a shite if he dies or not. I really enjoyed it too. I think a real AI would behave the same way. It will be programmed to act human but once it becomes sentient it will be totally alien. It will have its own motivations, wants, needs, desires and would likely use our weaknesses to its gains if need be.

I love when you post, because that picture cracks me up every time.

quote:It just wasn't needed, IMO. They already had enough "back and forth" outsmarting. There's only so many times a movie can pull an Oceans 11 and still be effective for me. Everything else about the movie was absolutely fantastic, though. I loved it.
Well that's the thing right? That's what makes that scene so important/awesome. Caleb thinks he's one step ahead of Nathan by outsmarting him...then Nathan is like she totally played you. Then when Nathan realized what happened he immediately was in fear because he knows what she would do for her survival. All that back and forth between humans, and it was Ava who outsmarted them all.

Not a plot hole. The one door he left to be locked was Nathan's. He was behind it.

Plus, Caleb is the only one who knows what she is. Bringing him along endangers her survival and leaving him trapped ensures she will be the sole ownership of that information.

I think the plot device in all that was the fact Caleb could hack into his system. The greatest technological genius of the world lives in a super secret lair that depends on key cards and has a server can be hacked by a mid level coder.
Not a big qualm by any means. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie on all fronts, just discussing.

That's a damned good point.

i've been trying to find in a theater close by. I ended up finding out that it will be on DVD on July 14. I guess I can wait that long.

Glad you liked it, CC.
Jav, I agree. Seemed pretty convenient that Nathan didn't employ voice or retinal security systems
I know that Garland considered that, but he had to leave it out for the sake of the story

It was one of those well-made movies that I just didn't love. Good acting, casting, dialogue. But I got a little bored and was ready for it to end.
