I came across this article and considering Dave is retiring next month, I thought it was somewhat relevant. Still an interesting perspective nonetheless.

Without that daily shared event Americans stopped thinking about how much we were alike, and started focusing on how we were different. America began to fracture. Cable and satellite providers gained a greater market share and every major network created their own late night show: Arsenio Hall, Joan Rivers, Pat Sajack, Jon Stewart, Chevy Chase, Carson Daly, Bill Maher, Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, Craig Ferguson, Chelsea Handler, Conan, Colbert, Kimmel, Fallon, Meyers. There were now countless choices for late night viewing; however, more choices do not necessarily lead to happier people. The menu at the Cheesecake Factory has the size and breadth of a Pynchon novel, but I've never seen anyone reading it with a smile on their face. America fractured even more. We were falling to pieces. What we needed was something to make us whole again.

So the root of our societal problems are too many channels...

johnny carson may have been one of the biggest unrepentant assholes in the history of show biz.

dave is supposedly kind of a dick. he picked on my high school French teacher when they were in high school...so he gets cool points, because that guy was a loser

I'm just glad someone else noticed the size of the Cheesecake Factory menu.

Not that I spend a lot of time there...

Carson was so much better than the rest of them. His ability to ad lib and improvise was matched by only a few. Not to mention his skits.

How many of them are brave enough to try skits?

Most do skits... Conan, Fallon all the time

We have problems for a lot more reasons than that a-hole leaving.

I actually kind of see the point here, maybe if I don't completely agree with it. I do believe that finding smaller communities of only the things we enjoy is part of this (and that goes for channels, the representative, and everything else.) Choice is good, unlimited choice though.... I get it.

I think what happens is that naturally we eschew other opinions, other communities, rather than seek harmony. Maybe that's just a part of human nature. Because clearly we want a collective, whether that was as a whole watching Carson or as fractured groups enjoying our Conan, Fallon, Kimmel, etc.

Because I hate Fallon.

Kidding. But not really.

EVERYONE has a chip on their shoulder it seems now. Everyone has to be "the best," at something. How many lists come out every day listing those "best" things? Thanks buzzfeed. Combine that with the necessity to belong and you get this kind of atmosphere.

I brought some friends there for dinner the other day.
Took us a very long time to decide what we wanted. I have never been handed a spiral bound book before at a restaurant. Being a line cook or expediter there must suck arse.

I think the country went to shite when Johnny divorced his 4th wife after he beat her in a drunken rage.

Carson was talented, but he was a man for a very specific time. I'm a semi-old fart, but I'm happy to have moved on, thank you very much.

No, it's the Cheesecake Factory sucking the joy out of everybody with their novel length menus.
