can someone tell me what the big deal about "the scene" in deliverance is?

I've never seen it but a lot of people talk about "the scene" and it's referenced all the time in pop culture but I just don't get it. Didn't he just get booty raped? I mean it happens in prison all the time and rape has happened in plenty of movies but this movie seems to get put on a special pedestal. Am I missing something?

Its a good movie in general, even if you're not into hillbilly rape. Burt Reynolds is at his peak here.

Man, honestly, I feel as though his "badassness" isn't fully realized in the movie.

Well, it was 1972 so guy on guy rape was still pretty taboo for mainstream film back then.
Plus, up until that point in the movie, the mountain folks were just weird and suspicious. This was where the movie took a hard turn toward something more sinister than some city folks trying to navigate their way downriver.
In hindsight, there's also something about seeing that happen to a beloved film figure like Ned Beatty and then seeing Burt Reynolds in his prime exact some swift vengeance.

All of this.

Don't forget that the author of the book was gay...

That scene is why I won't watch deliverance again. The rest of the movie is good, but the white trash rape scene is a total deal breaker.

The hillbillies humiliated the crap out of Ned Beatty.

Far less worse than the rape scene in American History X.

Arky fan thinking this is perfectly normal...shocker.

He also played the sheriff in the movie.

The scene also works because they survived AND killed a dude. It bonds them and simultaneously creates tension as each character copes differently with both issues.

You're an Akry fan. You don't need to see it because you live it.
