I mean, not only do you see a naked fat Ned Beatty get butt pounded, but you have to literally watch him beg not to be butt pounded, make a feeble attempt to get away, and then squeal like a pig as a grown man rapes him...all while his best friend is forced to watch him.

No matter the era it's a very difficult scene to watch.

And, yes, Burt is a total badass. The black leather vest without shirt is a bit gay though...

"Don't forget that the author of the book was gay..."

His wife and kids would be interested. I grew up around the corner from them, took classes from him, and the gayest thing about JD was that he played tailback for Clemson.

Put in the historical context of 1972 that scene was groundbreaking cinema.

Gay sex, humiliation, genital mutilation, redneck/hillbilly hate, gay hate, and for at the time, such graphic violence (with arrow strikes to the rednecks).

It's also THE pivotal moment where the film turns from city boys off rafting in the wilds, typical male bonding, to emotional/psychological thriller.

You're seeing it from a historical perspective.

Imagine seeing the film in a time when male on male rape hadn't even been suggested in prior films. And you have no prior knowledge that the rape is in the film. Today, it would be like seeing full on penis/vaginal insertion in a feature film with no prior warning.

I expect he thanks god every night he wasn't typecast.

Beatty made a point of not discussing the scene in interviews. Once he saw that he was going to be "the raped guy", he nipped it in the bud and moved on.

Great movie.

The dam in the movie was actually really Jocasse Dam in upstate SC that was being built at the time. The scene where they are by that church cemetery towards the end is now at the bottom of the lake.

The book is really good.

Because it is disturbing, disgusting, horrifying, and degrading, just as much today as it was then.

Exactly. Especially when you didn't know the scene was coming. The character is a likeable guy that's a pushover. They're on a canoeing trip and next thing you know these inbred hillbillies strip him down and make him squeal like a pig.

I'm more shocked that American men are apparently desensitized to butt rape now.

I was not aware of this.

Something else to remember about Deliverance was that Dueling Banjos was a massive, massive hit. Which was odd, since the song is so uplifting and the film is so damn dark.

If you think that's bad go watch bone Tomahawk nothing could ever be that bad. Also the rape scene in clockwork orange was pretty bad.
