I saw this movie for the first time in my life last night. The special effects were amazing for 1982, but I found that they re-used too many of the same shots. It got repetitive seeing flyovers of the same buildings or shots of the same billboards over and over.

I really didn't like the plot either. It was hard to get invested in any of the characters, and the movie was hard to follow.

It's a film that should be noteworthy for the fantastic special effects, but I don't see it as a sci-fi classic from a plot perspective.

ill get blasted for this, but i saw it for the first time 3 or 4 years ago and all i could think of was judge dredd. think its just one of those movies you had to see at the time in order to appreciate it.

Watch it again in a few months, then again next year, you'll appreciate it more. It took me like 2 or 3 viewings to really get it. Also make sure you watch the Final Directors cut without the narration and happy ending.

It's a classic that along with The Road Warrior essentially invented the modern dystopian future movie. It's sad that people watch these movies now and think they're just OK and not that original, considering everyone has ripped them off so much and they actually were the originals. I know Blade Runner gets a lot of fanboy hype, but it is a legendary movie that deverses the accolades.

For me it is the music that makes that movie great. That sound combined with the visuals of a depressing future landscape really set the tone.

Right.. the story drags a bit if that's all you pay attention to. Sort of like 2001 in that way. There is a deeper meaning to the movie the more watches you give it.

The music, special effects and visuals are still stunning today.

I think you're correct here. It's like someone who has never seen Star Wars watching it for the first time in their 30's or 40's. It wont have near the same effect as seeing it when it first came out. I missed the boat with Blade Runner myself and saw it for the first time a few years ago.

I actually saw it for the first time last Friday night. It was solid, but definitely not what I expected. I thought it would be more of a science-fiction fantasy type movie with a sweeping fully developed world behind it (like dune or something), but it actually was more about the characters than anything else. Honestly it reminded me a lot of Terminator and Alien.

I love it but I can't really explain why.

I don't care for it. Harrison Ford is terrible in it.

I found the score horribly dated and way too forward in the sound mix on top of that.

I really didn't care for the movie at all and am completely baffled by the praise it gets.

As mentioned, Ford is really not terribly engaged.

I've started it multiple times, watch the first 20 minutes, and just can't get into it. Maybe I should try watching it earlier than 9 at night.

One thing I like about Bladerunner is when ever I'm playing the movie quote game... I pull out "More Human than Human" and I normally stump everyone. I also have to convince people that Rob Zombie had to get the song idea from somewhere.

I always get scolded here for saying this. But Ford's performance is more wooden than anything Keanu Reeves has done.

And this is a bad thing how?? These movies you mentioned are pillars of the sci/fi genre and far more about characters and mood than huge effects and backstory. That is exactly why they are/were so good.

It's why the studio wanted the voice-over narration...

And then once everyone had watched it 100 times with voice-overs...

The other cuts came along without voice-over and it was awarded the gold star of approval from fans who already knew the plot verbatim.

i imagine if a person listed the first 20 websites that ranked sci fi movies, it would never be below #5, and would in fact never be below #2 ... it's usually between 2001 and BR for #1 ... and that's for a reason ...
