I personally believe 1994 and 1999 are the two greatest years in film history. Even better than 1939. 1994 was just a singularly great year, but 1999 changed the way movies are made. Probably the most "important" year since 1939 or sometime in the early 1970s.
You had to expect a low foreign film total. Though I do not really like Fellini. I respect him, but I just don't love his films. They are movies I respect without actually liking, which makes them fall short of true greatness in my eyes. Though I did come close to putting on the Spider's Stratagem by Bertolucci, a director I far prefer. It's just easier to punt on foreign films.
And thank God there's been low support for Gladiator, Titanic, and Life Is Beautiful.

Agreed. There are another 10 or so movies made in 1999 that haven't even been listed that are amazing in their own right. When it comes to decades I love the 50's, but 1999 and 1939 are the two greatest years in film history.

True. I love Tarkovsky (Solaris, Stalker, Andrei Rubilev, Nostalghia) but understand why no one else has put him on their lists. I've been toying with a personal Top 100 while doing this, so I may put it up at some point.

Agreed. I think all three are far over rated, but you always hear people mentioning them, I was bracing myself for a top-ten containing these very three films.

I'd love to see it. I may do one as well for my own edifiaction, mainly because I've been inspired by the EW lists for all media.
And 1994 is so good even the mediocre movies were really good: PCU, the Ref, the Paper, Pret a Porter, etc.

Note to participants:
I'm thinking of revealing the Top 100 in an extended way. Maybe 10 at a time (during one day) until the Top 20.
I'll do short write-ups for the groups, but the top 15 can have write-ups per film (maybe 10?). Does anyone want to do a short paragraph on a favorite film once the Top 20 has been decided? I would look at your list and determine the best few to choose from therefore not showing the entire list to folks.
This is still maybe a week or so off depending on the activity in the thread.
Also, maybe a different name? Top 100 is so played out and I dislike the "Best 100 of All-time". Hmmmmmm

Agreed. I would look at the participants list and determine the best couple of films to choose from considering the final 20, therefore not showing the whole list to everyone.

I wasn't thinking a synopsis. A personal reflection on the film. Could be historical, could be about the effect it had on the person, could just be a general reaction to the film.

By both points (1 = 20, 2 = 19, etc.) and the amount of times its listed. So far you're the only one so it doesn't make the top 100 yet. Right now the cut off is 2 people listing the same movie, could be 3 by the time this is over.
