Would the Cowboys have benefited from another owner buying the team in 1989?

Given Jerry Jones’ proclivity in meddling with the franchise, does another owner prevent 25+ years of mediocrity (even though the first seven years had a dynasty)?

Jerry is a great owner & businessman. His problem is he should have hired a separate GM to handle all personnel decisions with the team & been hands off & let the GM do their thing. His ego won't let him do any of this. Any Cowgirl fan will tell you this.

He hit a home run hiring Jimmy and a great supporting cast of coaches and scouts.

That probably reinforced a belief he had a magic touch as a GM.

I don't think you can name an owner that built up a brand like Jerry Jones has with the Cowboys. The guy has been a business and marketing genius on that front. But, he needs to let a GM start handling player and coach personnel. He's definitely slipped over the years in that respect.

He is the greatest thing for the Cowboys, ultimately gets in his own way.

Deep down like Al Davis for example Jerry wants to be the Head Coach and GM. It doesn't work.

I don’t understand why so many coaches want to be GM’s/player personnel directors too. Same with owners.

It’s a full time job to scout and evaluate hundreds/ of collegiate and professional players every year, to keep track of contracts of not just your team but every player in the league, and to manage your salary cap.

Has it not been proven that the most sustained success occurs when a HC is not the GM, but works extremely closely together to lay out exactly what the team needs to run the scheme the HC desires?

Al had the chops to do that. Jerry doesn’t.

Did he, though? I remember some gawdawful Raiders drafts. All you had to do was flash a little speed at the combine and you were a Raider.

At the end of the day, it's a business and he's done a damn good job of building the cowboys brand. It's hard to say many could have done better. He also has Superbowls, so it's not like it's been all bad and they've had solid teams recently, regardless of their playoff struggles.

Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Stadium for $150 million in February 1989. The team is currently valued between $8-9 billion.

I think that since he bought the team for 150 million and it's now worth 7.64 billion, they won 3 Super Bowls and are in the playoffs regularly they are doing OK. His problem is that he is too involved in roster of the team, who stays, who goes. Now he owns the team and pays for everything and all of the contracts so it's his choice, he can do what he wants but until he relinquishes the overall say in who stays and goes, they will not win another Super Bowl.

The Stadium is an engineering marvel that is a cash cow. Everyone wants to copy it. The tour is amazing (and I hate the Cowboys). Winning a SB isn't easy and they have never been awful during his whole tenure. Have they ever drafted top 3-5 since he's been there?

Al was the HC of the Raiders, OL coach at Citadel, WR coach for the Chargers.

I want to say he was the Commissioner of the AFL as well at a time.

Al may had bad drafts in his later years, but he was a football man. But is there a team that has not had a bad draft?

To this day, I still am glad that Stevie Boy took over the real GM duties, especially after the miss on Moss. Stevie Boy first go round at the gig wasn't great, but this second time he has done very well.

Hard to believe it's already 15 years old.

Al was AFL coach of the year, and then commissioner.
Definitely had more chops than Jerry.

I don’t think Jerry is good at sniffing out the intangibles in players… he might know how to build a team but he can’t find the traits that win in the playoffs

I see all these GM comments

The cowboys have a damn good roster and have drafted well the past few years.

No. 3 Super Bowl wins since 1989 is still better than the vast majority of the league.
