Rays. Just bc they have a smaller fan base. Geaux Rays though
Posted on 10/2/13 at 1:12 pm to JEAUXBLEAUX
I, as well as other Braves fans would love to see the Rays represent the AL. It would be a short 6 hour drive to St. Petersburg to catch a game there. Plus, my wife has family all over the area, so I would have a free place to stay!

I always thought it was nuts that the Giants and A's met in the WS and a major earthquake struck the Bay Area during a game (well, almost)
One of the early sports memories I have. It helps that it was a day after my birthday.

Believe it or not, particularly in baseball, the stadium lend adds to the "viewability" if you're not a fan of the team. Why I never can bring myself to watch the Rays.

The only team that would draw casual interest is the Dodgers.
The Indians haven't won in 65 years.
Most people have seen major league.
I think the tribe in the WS would draw some casual interest.

Rays actually have very good local TV ratings. WS ratings for the Florida teams weren't as bad as most people would expect. It seems like it's tough to predict how the ratings will end up, last year's Tigers Giants matchup looked good but the ratings were way down.

Because it was a sweep

Nope. Because all the Detroit fans have rolling power outages and couldn't ever completely watch a game...like all the rest of the third world cities.

MLB doesnt want Tampa or Oakland b/c those are teams that friggin tarp their stadium to create fake sellouts even in the postseason.

what, that they do it or that you don't like it being cited as a legitimate reason for MLB hoping somebody else makes the WS?
its embarrassing as all get out for the league that both teams do this.

they fear a 4-game sweep .. I think games 6 and 7, no matter what the teams are will bring in some casual fans

It would have been much worse if the Reds had won and gone to the series.
But probably Rays and Pirates or Braves. Rays draw no crowd even in their own city. The Pirate any other year would be the clear choice, but they are cinderella this year and people will watch them.
The Braves and Cardinals are really toss ups. They both draw fairly large markets. I think the Dodgers, given that they themselves haven't had much success recently and they are in a huge market, would be a bigger draw. The Braves, while in a larger local market, don't necessarily have a larger national market than the Cards, so either one of those teams would likely be bad for ratings in comparison to Pittsburgh (the feel good story) or L.A. (which is... well, L.A.).

If the MLB didn't want teams with terrible stadiums to be seen on TV, they'd make them build new ones.
That's beyond ridiculous. I can see Tampa because of the lack of attendance, not their stadium.
I don't sit down for 9 innings to stare at how a stadium looks on television. Give me a break.

wut?
It has nothing to do with the actual stadiums (which I didn't say) and everything to do with it being embarrassing that two playoff teams need to tarp their stands due to a lack of fans.
Again, the MLB does NOT want teams that tarp their stadiums to be in the WS b/c it looks awful for sponsors/TV execs.
Just b/c YOU only want to see the best teams play doesn't mean the league isn't upset at the perception empty tarped stadiums gives to JoeQ Public and loathes the idea of them moving on.
Sorry but Oakland and Tampa are currently the two least desirable teams that could make the WS and it is directly b/c for whatever reason they having trouble filling their stadiums up.
It's asinine to think MLB doesn't care about that crap happening during the playoffs.

Sorry, but ticket demand is high in Oakland. Ownership wants to keep the tarps on. But it looks like demand is so high, they're taking the third deck tarps off.
A 2012 Story
2013 - Removing Tarps due to demand of tickets.
If MLB were so worried about being embarrased because of lack of interest, they would make Oakland take down their tarps. And from the looks of it, it'd probably fill most of the stadium. It's not the A's fault Al Davis build that monstrosity in CF that they keep covered.

Again, the Rays are the ONLY team in the postseason without a strong fanbase. They would be the only team Fox would fear
Posted on 10/2/13 at 4:10 pm to Prominentwon
55K really is not too bad for a team in an area with as many people as Oakland/San Fran Bay area. (7M+)
If they can get those tarps off and fill the stadium I will take back what I have said.
If they can't, sorry, but MLB is going to prefer other teams before them.
It doesnt even matter that the Pirates are in a small stadium.
Its the perception the tarps create.
and from your own link
if ownership doesn't believe the demand is there I don't know why you would.

After finishing fourth from last in major league attendance in the regular season, the A’s decided to maintain intimacy in the playoffs, in part because they are skeptical they could sell out a completely open stadium. So they will be keeping 19,888 upper-deck seats at Oakland Coliseum, a number close to the team’s 20,728 average attendance, under wraps through the American League Championship Series, should the A’s make it that far.

That stadium seats 63,132. It's built for football. It's fair to say that you don't believe that you can sell out that many seat due to the fact that there are 15k of those seats in that CF monstrosity. Demand, understandably, would not be high for those 15k.
