Why is Women's Basketball so Hyped?

Women's basketball is by far the most talked about women's sport on every national sports channel.
Why is this?
Women's soccer, gymnastics, and softball are all significantly more entertaining and have much better looking girls

Women's basketball is hyped?

Not by people I know, but if you turn on ESPN and Fox Sports, they'll talk about at the half of CBB games routinely. Even SECN talks about it more than other women's sports.

So you're wondering why they talk about women's basketball and not other sports during the halftime of men's basketball games?

Just in general it gets talked about more. Geno Auriemma is on ESPN all the time. Honestly, women's basketball probably gets more national coverage than college baseball yet I can't think of anyone I know who follows it

For starters, it's basketball, a sport people are more likely to watch than most other sports.

If you look at attendance and tv ratings it gets about the right amount of hype. It's not unusual for good college programs to have attendance figures in the thousands and draw more people than women's soccer or gymnastics.
Plus the WNBA is still around so enough people must be spending money on it.

WNBA isn't very hyped..

The WNBA is only around because it's heavily subsidized by the NBA. If it had to survive on it's on it would have folded a long time ago. Attendance is low and tv ratings are worse.

Women's college basketball is moderately popular because fans have allegiances to the university.

Well basketball is the second most popular sport behind football, and women can't play football, so....
I wouldn't call it "hyped" either. No one actually gives a shite about women's basketball

It definitely helps when the most dominant team is half an hour from Bristol, CT, and that network also has broadcast rights to their games.
That being said, said program making a UCLA-esque run helps A LOT. "Will they ever lose?" is legit newsworthy.

It helps a great deal that ESPN is headquartered in Bristol, Connecticut. Connecticut has no professional sports team so UCONN men and women's basketball are really the only local teams they have worth rooting for. I really believe hockey would be a much bigger and widely covered sport on ESPN if the Whalers had never left Connecticut.

I gave a shite about women's basketball when they were making Final Fours. A lot.
I have ZERO interest now because Caldwell has the program circling the bowl.

because basketball is a bigger sport than gymnastic and Soccer and softball.
Now shoudl it be?
Idk. I think Volleyball is a pretty interesting sport to watch. But it never gets any love.

Because basketball is more exciting to watch compared to those sports. A majority of their viewers aren't watching just to watch the "hot" players otherwise gymnastics would be getting much more views

Women's basketball may be the biggest of all female sports, but look at the regular season's average attendance across the country. A well attended female college game may get 3-4K absent the top 4-5 programs. And as an aside, LSU gymnastics several times last yr had crowds of over 13K. But the hype is all bout money as ESPN has too much tv time invested in it to ignore it.

It is when you have guys rising above the rim and swatting shots into the first row. Unless there's Brittany Griner out there this doesn't happen in women's basketball.
To me basketball is the sport where athleticism most greatly affects the entertainment value of the game. In other sports two evenly matched teams can put on a good show regardless of talent.

As far as the other sports you mentioned (gymnastics, soccer, softball) it makes sense when you compare to the popularity of similar male sports/events.
Gymnastics: Covered VERY heavily in the Olympics. But there are lots of events that are only covered heavily in the Olympics. You hear a lot about Phelps and Bolt once every four years and that's it.
Soccer: The USWNT gets big coverage for the World Cup like the men (the USWNT even gets Olympic coverage which the men don't even if they qualify, due to the nature of the men's tournament). But outside the World Cup, men's soccer is not covered much so it makes sense that women's isn't either.
Softball: College baseball is not a big sport nationally.
Football and men's basketball are the only two big, national NCAA sports. There obviously isn't a female equivalent to football, but there is with bball, so that's why it's popular compared to other women's sports.
It is ironic though bc basketball is probably the sport where the difference between men and women is most noticeable since it's largely played in the air. With the other sports, either the difference, while still there, isn't as apparent to the eye (e.g., soccer) or women are actually better/more entertaining than the male equivalent (e.g., gymnastics).
